Zallow finishes ninth; Hardin 12th in Miami

Saturday’s 200-meter dash at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational provided a different challenge for Younstown State sprinter Chad Zallow. He faced international talent.
The 80-runner field included college and Olympic athletes as well as runners from Ecuador, Canada, Bahamas and other nations.
Zallow placed 16th in the event, finishing with a time of 21.59.
“This meet down in Miami was definitely a pretty loaded field with guys being a lot of Olympians and world champions from across the world,” Zallow said. “It was definitely a high-level meet here.”
Jamynk Jackson (21.91) came in 29th in the event and Brendan Lucas (22.15) was 35th.
Zallow also competed in the 110 hurdles and the 100.
He finished ninth with at 14.21 seconds in the hurdles and 16th in the 100 with a 10.56.
Collin Harden finished 12th, running a 14.46 in the 110 hurdles. Harden also finished 12th in the 400 hurdles with a 56.57.
“I hit a couple hurdles,” Zallow said. “It’s definitely not what I’m capable of.”
Omar McLeod, a Nike runner, won the even with a time of 13.29.
Olivia Jones finished 14th in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a 15.04.
Jaliyah Elliott came in 12th after running an 11.53 in the women’s 100.
Zach Gehm finished fourth in the men’s discus earlier in the day. Gehm 50.14 meters.
In the women’s discus, Kaitlyn Merwin placed 10th for the Penguins with a toss of 41.63.
Daiquain Watson finished 13th in the men’s long jump, finishing at 6.96.
Chontel Fils finished fourth in the women’s long jump. Her best jump was 5.76, 0.27 meters behind the leader, Anna Keefer of the University of North Carolina.
The Penguins will be spilt again next week. One portion of the team will compete in the Ashland Alumni Invitational while another group will head to the Duke Invitational.
Zallow wants to focus on competing in the hurdles and the 200 instead of competing in three events.
“It’s a little harder running good times when you got three events in one day,” Zallow said.
