Kuberski to speak to Curbstone Coaches

Doug Kuberski, Youngstown State University women’s bowling coach, will be the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road in Beaver Township.

The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

Also, plans are under way for the 52nd annual Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Induction ceremony which is set for May 5 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. The keynote speaker will be former Major League Baseball umpire John Hirschbeck. Tickets are available by contacting Patty Schuley at 330-207-8157.

Eastern Gateway splits with Lakeland CC

AUSTINTOWN

Hayden Kristophel’s walk-off double in the bottom of seventh inning lifted the Eastern Gateway Gators to a 5-4 victory over Lakeland Community College on Saturday and a doubleheader split at Austintown Fitch High School.

Kristophel’s hit scored Jeremiah Papa with the game-winning run as EGCC (14-12, 8-8 OCCAC) salvaged a split of their four-game weekend series with LCC.

Papa had three hits, including a double in the second game with Doug Painter also adding a double to pace the Gators offensively. Derickmael Cuadrado picked up the win in relief of Logan Torma.

In the opening tilt, Lakeland defeated the Gators 12-10 despite 11 hits by EGCC.

Painter and Evan Knaus each had three hits, including a double and Antonio Walker two for the Gators. Cuadrado suffered the loss as he earned the decision in both games.

Eastern Gateway will next play at CCAC-Boyce on Wednesday with first-pitch slated for 1 p.m.

Kennedy Catholic stars in Scott Brown Classic

Morgantown, W.va.

University High School in Morgantown, W.Va., will host the 30th annual Scott Brown Little General Classic. The basketball game will be held today at 2 p.m.

Kennedy Catholic (Pa.) standouts Oscar Tshiebwe and Mattia Acunzo will play for Employers’ Innovative Network. They will play Mid-state Automotive.

Tickets cost $8 and are available at Little General on Van Voorhis Road in Morgantown.

Lightning’s Kucherov suspended for Game 3

COLUMBUS

NHL leading scorer Nikita Kucherov has been suspended for Game 3 of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s first-round series against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Kucherov was suspended for boarding Columbus defenseman Markus Nutivaara late in Tampa Bay’s 5-1 loss in Game 2 to trail 2-0 in the series. Kucherov was given a major penalty and ejected for hitting Nutivaara in a defenseless position with 4:26 remaining in the lopsided defeat.

The Presidents’ Trophy winning Lightning will have to try to win in Columbus today without the player who put up a league-best 128 points during the season. They also could be without banged-up Norris Trophy caliber defenseman Victor Hedman, who did not practice Saturday.

Minnesota Duluth wins 2nd straight title

Buffalo, N.Y.

Parker Mackay had a goal and an assist, Hunter Shepard stopped 18 shots and Minnesota Duluth won its second straight college hockey title, beating Massachusetts 3-0 on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs (29-11-2) became the ninth school to successfully defend a title, and first since Denver in 2004 and ‘05. It’s the third championship for Minnesota Duluth, which beat Denver in the Frozen Four final a year ago and also won in 2011.

Shepard had his seventh shutout of the season and nation-leading 29th victory, improving his postseason record to 8-0.

Mikey Anderson had a goal and two assists. Noah Cates scored with 2:42 remaining to seal the victory for the Bulldogs, who were making their third consecutive appearance in the final, dating to a 3-2 loss to Denver in 2017.

Freshman goalie Filip Lindberg stopped 28 shots for the Minutemen (31-10)
