St. Christine’s fourth- through eighth-grade students recently performed their annual spring musical, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr.”
Musical Director Michelle Vargo and Director Anita Philibin coordinated more than 100 students in the musical.
“The students do everything,” Vargo said. “They do the lights, pull the curtains, do costumes and help build the sets.”
Vargo said the choice to perform “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr.” was based on the budget, and students who were interested in the performance.
“We look at our talent and what we can afford to do and it was a natural choice,” Vargo said.
Students have been rehearsing for the play since December, moving to weekly after school practices beginning in January.
The program is optional for students, Vargo said, and has a long standing tradition at St. Chrisitine’s.
“We have a long tradition of doing musicals here,” Vargo said. “It went by the wayside for a while, but about 18 years ago it started again and we have been performing a spring musical ever since.”
She explained that a range of teachers and community members volunteer to assist students in the production, including former JFK teacher Fred Hoover.
“Mr. Hoover is our right hand man,” Philibin said. “He helps us build the sets and always has a smile on his face.”
The students performed the musical four times, from March 13-16.
“The students rise to our expectations,” Vargo said. “They are all very energetic and proud of what they do.”
