C.H. Campbell Elementary School third-grade students presented their annual Third Grade Physical Education Program in the high school gymnasium on March 6. The theme of the show was “Surfs Up,” and featured several songs from The Beach Boys.
Ronie Haurin, C.H. Campbell physical education instructor, readied the students for their performance. In keeping with the theme, the students wore brightly-colored tie-dye T-shirts for the show.
The students performed two shows, one in the morning for the C.H. Campbell student body and one in the evening for their families and friends. The shows featured routines which showcased the physical education skills the students have mastered throughout the school year.
Students introduced each activity as the classes performed throughout the show.
The students entered the gym to “Cleveland Shuffle” by 71 North Boyz and lined up across the gym floor. They then performed ‘The Wave’ to the tune of “Wipeout” by The Safaris. Next, the students celebrated at a beach party with hula hoops, jump rope, basketball, beach balls, tumbling and big frisbees, all to Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration.”
To continue their show, the students lined up across from one another and tossed a beach ball back and forth while “Surfin’ Safari” by The Beach Boys played overhead. Then they gathered in small groups to play spike ball to “Catch a Wave” by The Beach Boys.
The classic limbo was next, of course, because it’s not a beach party without the limbo. The students tried their hand at making it under the limbo stick while “The Limbo Rock” by Chubby Checker played. Next, the students tossed frisbees to their classmates and ran a relay with them, all to the tune of “Be True To Your School” by The Beach Boys.
The students took a break from their beach party to sing the C.H. Campbell version of Canfield’s “Alma Mater.” They jumped right back into beach mode with a choreographed dance routine to “Dance, Dance, Dance,” the Gonoodle version, with some freestyle dance moves thrown in throughout the song.
Two giant parachutes were brought out for the children to perform several tricks with, accompanied by “Heart of Rock and Roll” by Huey Lewis and the News. Next, each student, some decked out in sunglasses and sun hats, grabbed a small foam ‘surfboard’ and pretended to surf to “Surfin’ U.S.A.” by The Beach Boys.
The students concluded their show with Earthball, with the sounds of “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors.
Haurin thanked the students for being a good audience and thanked everyone who helped make the show a success.
“Thank you for being a good audience today. I’d also like to thank the teachers for all their help with the show,” Haurin said.
To exit the gym floor, and to celebrate the end of the show, the students freestyle danced to “Cleveland Shuffle,” showing off their impressive dance moves.
