Canfield High School bands presented its winter concert in celebration of Music in Our Schools Month on March 5.

The concert featured the Canfield High School concert band, Canfield High School symphonic band, concert band percussion ensemble, symphonic band mallet ensemble and flute trio.

Canfield High School Band Director Michael Kelly welcomed the audience to the concert.

“Good evening and welcome. Thank you for being here tonight. We will start with the Concert Band. We hope you enjoy,” Kelly said.

The concert band opened their performance with “Imperial March” by Karl L. King, arranged by Gene Milford. The flute trio of Gia Martin, David Schmidt and Nicholas Krcelic performed “Allegro Giocoso” by Franz Joseph Hayden, arranged by Acton Ostling.

“Our next piece is ‘Armenian Rhapsody,’ an OMEA Class C required selection, It is a neat piece of music. It is a combination of four Armenian folk songs, so we got to learn music from another country and another culture,” Kelly said.

The concert band closed their portion of the concert with “Cascade River Overture” by Douglas Akey.

“I’d like to introduce David Drevna, our esteemed colleague and friend, who will be conducting the percussion ensembles,” Kelly said.

The concert band percussion ensemble of Madison Duke, Joy Jenkins, Julia Sansoterra, Ashley Scalzo, Christopher Smallwood, Zachary Smith, Cadin Tsvetkoff, Madison Zets and Taylor Zets performed “Balalaikan Holiday” by Morris Alan Brand.

The symphonic band mallet ensemble of Benjamin Janik, Brianna Remias, Ethan Scalzo, Meera Sethi, Tanner Tsvetkoff and Justin Tura performed “Farandole” from “L’Arlesienne” by George Bizet, arranged by Ruth Jeanne.

Kelly then introduced the symphonic band,

“Our first piece is ‘Man of the Hour March’ by Cincinnati native Henry Fillmore. Next, ‘Prelude, Siciliano, and Rondo’ has three very unique movements, and our last selection of ‘Backstage Pass’ is really fun. It reminds you of Broadway. There’s a pop theme, then a ballad, then big band and then the pop theme returns at the end,” Kelly said.

The symphonic band took the stage and performed “Man of the Hour March” by Henry Fillmore, edited by Robert E. Foster, “Prelude, Siciliano, and Rondo” by Malcolm Arnold, arranged by John P. Paynter and “Backstage Pass” by Brian Balmages.

“Thank you again for coming to our winter concert. Have a good evening,” Kelly said to end the show.
