Boys track team improves to 5-0 with victory over Howland

The Boardman High School boys track team improved its 2019 record to 5-0 with a victory over the Howland Tigers by a score of 83-54 on April 2.

The Spartans opened the meet with a first place finish in the 4x800 meter relay with the team of junior Mitchel Dunham, senior Payton Torres, sophomore Cristian Ortiz and sophomore Justin Maloney. Junior Brian Yauger placed second in the 110 hurdles and senior Josh Rodriguez placed second in the 100 meter dash. The 4x200 meter relay team of sophomore Brennan Stratton, junior Isaiah Suarez, freshman DJ Evans and Rodriguez placed first. Dunham placed second in the 1600 with junior River Flatley in third.

Senior Nick Torres finished first in the 400 meter run with junior Alan Cuevas in second and sophomore Anthony Marshall in third. Yauger placed first in the 300 hurdles with freshman Trey DePietro in third.

In the 800 meter run, Payton Torres placed second and Ortiz was second. Meanwhile, in the 200 meter run, Suarez was second and Stratton placed third. The next event was the 3200 meter run which saw Dunham place second. The 4x400 relay team of Stratton, Ortiz, Suarez and Payton Torres placed first.

In the field events, junior Dave Merdich placed first in the shot put with senior Nikitas Missos in second, and senior Nathan Cornelius was third. The discus had Missos in first, Merdich in second and sophomore Luke Huzicka in third. Sophomore Aiden Glatz placed second in the high jump, and first in long jump. Sophomore Sam Cammack was second in the pole vault and sophomore Ted Anzevino placed third. This week’s Meet MVP’s were junior Alan Cuevas and sophomore Luke Huzicka.

“This was a solid effort against a very good team from Howland,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “We have a lot of youth and inexperience in a lot of events. Our athletes are progressing nicely and our coaching staff is doing a great job.”
