Mahoning County 4-H dinner and auction set

The third annual Mahoning County 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place on April 13 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m., with dinner starting at 6 p.m., and a live auction to follow with Auctioneer George Roman. Auction items range from gift baskets to top-quality firearms to 2019 Ohio State University football tickets and so much more. More than 150 items were donated by area businesses, individuals and 4-H clubs. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment Fund. The money is used to send youth to state and national camps, to train volunteers, for educational supplies and to promote 4-H in Mahoning County. Tickets are $30. Author to speak on decline of area steel industry

Steel industry author, Dale Perelman, will discuss the causes for the decline of Northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania steel production on April 20 10 a.m. at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society. The program is open to the public. Admission is $6 for non-members and $5 for members. Refreshments will be served and a 50/50 raffle will take place, to benefit the society’s education mission. Akron Children’s to honor Hirschbecks

Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will honor John and Denise Hirschbeck and family as the 2019 Champion for Our Valley’s Children at the ninth annual celebration dinner May 7 at The Lake Club in Poland. Each holiday season, the Hirschbecks personally deliver wishlist items to families of Akron Children’s patients with complicated, serious or life-threatening health conditions through the Magic of Michael Foundation. The organization was formed in memory of the Hirschbeck’s son Michael, who passed away in 2014 from complications of adrenoleukodystrophy, a genetic brain disease. The Champions for Our Valley’s Children event will highlight the hospital’s progress in the Mahoning Valley and recognize those who helped to make it possible, including donors, volunteers, staff and community partners. Three additional individuals and organizations will receive the Children’s Advocate Award, including Julie Costas, Janelle Nagy of Piggyback Foundation of Youngstown and Dr. Sergul Erzurum and Karen Segesto of Sight For All United. Local historican to speak at library

Traci Manning, local historian and curator of education with the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, will give a presentation on “Founding Mothers: Great Women in Mahoning Valley History” at 10 a.m. on April 13, at the Boardman library. Manning will speak about Catherine Dougherty Hillman, Dora Schwebel, Mary Ann Campana and others and how their stories and struggles helped to shape our local history. The lecture is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society and is free to the public. For information, contact Deborah Liptak at 330-740-6086. The Boardman Historical Society meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library for a lecture on some aspect of local history. Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8

The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. Scout Troop 22 hosts pancake breakfast

St. Christine Scout Troop 22 is hosting a pancake breakfast on April 14 at the St. Christine Parish Center, located at 3165 S. Schenley Ave. in Youngstown, from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. This pancake breakfast benefits Scout Troop 22 for summer camp/activities and other year-round program costs. The breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes with a variety of fruit toppings, sausage, scrambled eggs, milk, orange juice and coffee, and costs $7 per person, children 6 and under free. Tickets can be purchased at the door and carry out is available.

Spring getaway bus trip fundraiser

There will be a spring getaway bus trip fundraiser sponsored by the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic Committee with proceeds given to the American Cancer Society to The Rivers in Pittsburgh on May 11. The cost is $30 per person, $10 play and $5 food coupon from the casino. There is no guarantee the casino will pay these exact perks. The bus will leave Fab Limo, at 3681 Connecticut Avenue in Austintown, at 9 a.m. and will leave from The Rivers at 5 p.m. and arrive back at Fab Limo by 6:30 p.m. The deadline for reservations is May 9. Money is not refundable but the ticket can be transferred to another person. A valid photo ID is required. TeenXTreme blackout poetry contest

April is National Poetry Month, so indulge in some ‘creative destruction’ and express your inner poet during Boardman library hours. Create a poem by eliminating - blacking out - the words you don’t want from newspaper and magazine articles (or book pages) which are provided. Three winners will be chosen from entries throughout the county and awarded cash prizes. Contact a librarian for details. This program is for teens in grades seven through 12.

Kindergarten readiness stations

The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of April, stations feature preschool board games. Playing games is an easy and fun way to spend time together and they are also rich in learning opportunities. Board games can teach important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns and enjoying interaction with others. These skills are part of the social emotional domain of early learning. Stop by the Boardman branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station, play a game and help your child build these important skills.

Free tax preparation is available at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave., from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from April 2-10. Bonding with babies and books

Join the Boardman library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in April for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. For caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Boardman library on April 13 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. (Red Cross bus will be in parking lot accepting donations). Playtime at your library

Visit the Boardman library at 10 a.m. on April 17, to read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for children ages 2-6.

Apprentice’s Inn

Visit the Boardman library at 6:30 p.m. on April 17, to join the beginners Dungeons and Dragons club and take part in an adventure. Go on dangerous quests with daring fights and hopefully roll a D20 to save the day. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. This program is for teens.

Lego my library

Visit the Boardman library at 10 a.m. on April 13, to enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This program is for children ages 6 and up.

Smart voice assistants

Visit the Boardman library at 6 p.m. on April 18, to learn about smart voice assistants. Learn what they are and what makes them so smart. With plenty of hands-on practice, this program will give ideas to use one. A light snack will be served. This program is for adults.

Felt fun for the family

Visit the Boardman library from 10 a.m. until noon on April 19, for felt stories and a craft for school age children during this workshop. Attendees will make a portable flannel board that will house pieces for felt dolls, a race track or a favorite fairy tale. Space is limited. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Visit the Boardman library at 10 a.m. on April 24, for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Social Security speaker

April is National Social Security Month. Visit the Boardman library at 6:30 p.m. on April 25, to learn about Social Security from Public Affairs Specialist Robert Fenn of the SSA. This informational session will touch on programs, benefits and services. This program is for adults.

Friendly Squares host April square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly local square dance on April 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. 1970’s Disco will be the theme. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 16th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 16th annual fundraising auction as April 13. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, Youngstown, between 5:30 and 11 p.m. Cocktails and silent auction to begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. This year’s honorary chairwoman is CMHS teacher, mentor and Cardinals sports enthusiast, Nancy Shugart. Genealogy and local history workshop

This informal workshop from 10 a.m. to noon on April 27 at the Boardman library, is a way to receive answers to specific questions and learn about basic and specialized research techniques. The librarian will feature familiar and emerging resources to foster group discussion. Attendees may present individual challenges for problem solving. Local church hosts spaghetti dinner event

St. Angela Merici, located at 397 South Jackson Street in Youngstown, will host its eighth annual spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction event on April 14 from 12-4 p.m. The cost is $9 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under. Gamblers Anonymous meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition

YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
