YSU softball splits series with Colonials

The Youngstown State softball team split a doubleheader against Robert Morris on Wednesday. YSU won 3-2 and lost the second game 4-1.

In Game 1, Grace Cea hit an RBI single in the top of the first and added a sacrifice fly in third. Lexi Zappitelli hit an RBI triple to left field in the third.

Elle Buffenbarger struck out six in seven innings pitched for the Penguins (17-20). Buffenbarger (5-9) allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks.

Laura Coulter allowing three runs — two earned — on seven hits and a walk in six innings pitched for the Colonials (12-27).

Paige Geanangel took the loss in Game 2. Geanangel (3-3) allowed four runs on nine hits and three walks in 52/3 innings.

Tatum Christy and Zappitelli had the only hits for YSU.

YSU will host Cleveland State on Friday at 3 p.m.

Guesman named top AMCC newcomer

Latrobe, Pa.

The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference has announced that Saint Vincent College bowler Jessica Guesman was named the AMCC Newcomer of the Year.

Guesman, a Howland graduate who was named to the All-Conference second team, was sixth in the conference in strike percentage (37.1%) and fifth in single-pin spare percentage (82.1%). She finished ninth overall in individual scoring average (172.7) and was seventh in traditional game average (175.6).

A freshman, Guesman finished 11th in the conference in the PCPI ratings, the highest among all first-year bowlers. She set school records during the season for both high single game and high two-game series.

Eastern Gateway baseball team wins big

AUSTINTOWN

Grant Williams and Noah Laster narrowly missed hitting for the cycle as Eastern Gateway’s baseball team defeated Lorain Community College 13-3 on Wednesday at Austintown Fitch High School.

Williams needed a triple and Laster needed a double.

Doug Painter homered and doubled and Evan Knaus doubled twice as the Gators (12-10) pounded out 14 hits for the third time in five games.

Alfredo Cruz picked up the win for the Gators.

Lorain fell to 9-12.

EGCC will host Lakeland Community College in a doubleheader Friday at noon at Rich Coppola Field.

Ursuline-Mooney game at Pemberton Park

YOUNGSTOWN

The May 3 high school baseball game between Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney originally scheduled to be played at Cene Park has been moved to Pemberton Park.

Varsity and JV games are both scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on adjacent fields at Pemberton Park.

Hampton, Holcombe enter transfer portal

Youngstown

Youngstown State men’s basketball juniors Alex Holcombe and Kendale Hampton have entered the transfer portal. YSU confirmed the reports on Wednesday.

Hampton appeared in 28 games last season, averaging 5.9 points per game and was second on the team with a 37.6 3-point percentage.

Holcombe played in 20 games for YSU last season, averaging 1.5 points and 1.1 rebounds.

Pitcher Brady Aiken returns to Scrappers

The Lake County Captains pitcher Brady Aiken was transferred to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The Cleveland Indians announced the move Wednesday.

In five starts with the Scrappers in 2016, the left-hander went 2-1 with a 4.43 ERA in 221/3 innings pitched.

Since then, Aiken went 5-13 in 2017 and hasn’t recorded a decision in two relief appearances this season. He has a 4.95 ERA in 1322/3 innings over his last two seasons. Aiken missed th entire 2018 season due to injury.
