YSU softball team splits with Mercy

Sophomore Milena Lacatena hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Youngstown State softball team to a 5-2 win over Detroit Mercy.
The Penguins (16-19, 5-2 Horizon League) lost the second game of the doubleheader, 2-0.
In the opener, junior Tatum Christy went 3-for-4 while Lexi Zappitelli went 2-for-4 for the Penguins.
Senior Paige Geanangel tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts while allowing four hits.
Nikki Saibene’s sacrifice fly in the top of the of the fourth put the Penguins up 1-0 before the Titans knotted the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
In the nightcap, the Penguins mustered just two hits against the Titans (15-21, 7-5).
