Association announces HOF inductees

The Campbell Memorial High School Alumni Association has announced its 2019 inductees for the fourth class of its Hall of Fame. The honorees are Dr. Richard G. Barr (class of 1974); Richard A. Gozur Sr. (class of 1970); Tula Arfaras O’Neal (class of 1978); and Atty. Brian J. Macala (class of 1985). The Stavich family and Michael Soroka (class of 1980) also have been posthumously inducted. The induction will take place in conjunction with the Reverse Raffle Scholarship Appeal at 6 p.m. May 4 at the Archangel Michael Community Center in Campbell.

Dr. Barr is a radiologist and public speaker. He is a professor of radiology at Northeast Ohio Medical School and practices at Southwoods Imaging in Boardman. Barr is a founding trustee of the alumni association and also has sponsored an annual $2,000 scholarship, which is renewable for an additional three years, totaling $8,000.

Gozur has been involved in every facet of the Campbell community, serving in the educational, religious and political arenas. He was instrumental in government, serving as the city’s youngest councilman at 22; in the schools, assisting students to achieve their goals as an educator, administrator and coach for most of his life; and now, as a board member, playing an integral role in the development of the Activity Recreation and Cultural Center. Gozur also worked as first vice president of the alumni association.

Macala is a lifelong Campbell resident. He earned a bechelor’s degree in history from Youngstown State University and his law degree from Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University in 1992. He has been a practicing lawyer in the state for more than 26 years. He has remained active in the community, serving as the City of Campbell’s law director from 1996-2007 and 2011 to the present. He also served as a member of the Campbell Charter Review Commission in 1995 and was acting judge for the Campbell Municipal Court from 2008-11. Macala also organizes the Civics Day for Campbell Memorial High School seniors each year. A founding trustee of the alumni association, he also participates in Campbell alumni band night and has given his time and financial support to all alumni activities.

Arfaras O’Neal has been instrumental in bringing many charitable projects to fruition. She has actively participated in church and school affairs and has never denied a request for help. Arfaras O’Neal and the 2003 class that she sponsored are founding trustees of the association. She has played a vital role in the association’s efforts to thrive. As a teacher for 32 years, she has served in a number of positions, including coach, mentor, team leader, adviser and coordinator.

Members of the Stavich family have been supporters of the children of Campbell for decades. The brothers established Campbell Sash Works in 1946, Calex Corporation in 1952 and Stavich Enterprises in 1992. The Stavich Educational Foundation awarded savings bonds to high-achieving students. In 1998, the Stavich Scholarship to Youngstown State University was established. The scholarship provides full academic tuition as well as fees, books and supplies to the recipient for four years.

Soroka was an educator, mentor and coach. He dedicated hours of his time toward projects in the district, including designing the district’s first website and being instrumental in the inception of the school’s television station. He also assisted the alumni association in establishing its website and providing technical assistance. He was posthumously awarded the YSU Dean’s List Appreciation Award. The Michael “Mickey” Soroka Foundation was established by family and friends to honor his memory by providing means to continue his legacy of making an impact on the lives of the children of Campbell. The Mickey Soroka Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by his classmate and lifelong friend Dr. John Mastronarde, will be established this year through the alumni association.
