COLLEGES

Poland, Austintown Fitch announce commitments

Several area high school athletes — including five from Poland — announced their college commitments this week.

The Bulldogs’ college-bound seniors include JP Allsopp (Thiel soccer), Steve Bannon (John Carroll, football), MJ Farber (John Carroll, football), Cameron Hubbell (Westminster, football) and Lauren Sienkiewicz (John Carroll, soccer).

Austintown Fitch baseball player Devin Higginbotham also announced his college commitment to Westminster.

Allsopp played four years of soccer at Poland and was a captain as a senior. He also has played several seasons with Tri-County Soccer Club.

“I just really felt like everything clicked there — from the great campus to the coaching staff to the players on the team that I got to meet, it’s just a great place,” Allsopp said.

“Everyone at Thiel has been so friendly and nice, I can’t wait to go there and start the next chapter of my life.”

BASEBALL

South Range 2, Cardinal Mooney 1

BEAVER TOWNSHIP

Cardinal Mooney scored in the top of the first inning, but the Raiders responded with runs in the third and sixth innings. Nick Habeth struck out three and walked one in the complete-game win. AJ Pepperney didn’t allow a walk and struck out two in the loss. Trey Pancake, Jared Bajerski and Ben Rivera all recorded doubles for the Raiders (5-1). Rivera finished with three hits and Bajerski had two. JT Ogden hit a double for the Cardinals.

Austintown Fitch 5, Poland 0

POLAND

Brett Porter give up two hits and three walks through five innings and Bobby Cavalier didn’t give up any hits and a walk in the final two innings to complete the shutout. Lorenzo Russo and Casey Bokesch each had two RBIs for the Falcons. Braden Olson and Mike Kushner each had one hit for Poland.

Springfield 10, Sebring 0

NEW MIDDLETOWN

Clayton Nezbeth and Ryan McFadden combined on a shutout for the unbeaten Tigers (5-0). Clayton Nezbeth had two singles and a triple and Mitch Seymour and Chris Thompson each had two. Thompson had a triple and three RBIs and Jarrett Orbin had a double. Camden Green had two hits for the Trojans.

Mineral Ridge 9, Lisbon 7

LISBON

Jacob Carfalo had two hits and three RBIs and pitched a complete game for the Rams. Dakota Edwards and Mark Bunch had two hits for Mineral Ridge. Nick Mundy and Logan Bell each had two hits for the Blue Devils. Mundy drove in three runs.

Waterloo 10, Southeast 0

PALMYRA

Vikings pitcher Devon Beans threw a no-hitter in Waterloo’s victory. The only base runners for the Pirates came on two walks and an error. Luke Simons had three hits for the Vikings.

Southern 10, Crestview 6

EAST FAIRFIELD

The Indians scored eight runs in the top of the fifth to beat the Rebels. Josh Pratt drove in two runs and Caleb Glover picked up the win for Southern. Devin Turvey and Jordan Van Pelt each had two hits and Carter Blakeman had two RBIs for Crestview.

Canton Central Catholic 10, Columbiana 0

CANTON

The Crusaders (6-0) jumped on the Clippers (2-2) early with seven runs in the first ininng. Chase Franken led Columbiana with two singles and Brady Dixon, Erik Hopfenziz and Evan Kenneally also had hits.

Canfield 9, West Branch 4

CANFIELD

Nate Shaw earned the win, allowing four runs on five hits in 32/3 innings pitched for the Cardinals. Michael Budde pitched the remaining 31/3 innings of relief. Donavin Conrad took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits and striking out one. Dan Beistel, Dante Flak and Brayden Beck had two hits each for the Cardinals. Mason Walker had two hits and scored once for the Warriors. Tristan Ballard had a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Louisville 3, Salem 0

SALEM

Louisville scored all three runs in the top of the first inning and the Quakers dropped their second straight game. Starting pitcher Josh Young took the loss for the Salem (3-4, 2-2 Eastern Buckeye Conference).

Bristol 11, Lordstown 0

LORDSTOWN

Gage Elza recorded two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Mike Wiebe, Matt Stephens, Matt Church, Nick Church and Dustin Dodds each recorded two hits for the Panthers (4-2, 2-1 Northeastern Athletic Conference). Wiebe had a double. Stephens, Matt Church, Nick Church, Dodds drove in two runs each. Kaiden Anthony struck out five in the loss for the Red Devils (0-3, 0-3 NAC).

Grand Valley 9, Mathews 7

VIENNA

Mathews scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and one in the seventh, but came up short. Logan Newell earned the win for Grand Valley (2-0), striking out eight and walking five. Jackson Iceman took the loss for Mathews (3-1) with six strikeouts and three walks. Mathews’ Adam Wibert had two hits, including a home run, with five RBIs. Ryan Busser, including a double, and Daniel Gearhart had two hits. Nick Reichek also had a double and Gordon Seger drove in two runs.

Niles 11, Liberty 0

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP

David Mays hit a home run and had two RBI for Niles. Chase Sudzina also drove in a pair of runs and pitched a complete game, striking out four. Shane McKelvey led Liberty with three hits.

Lowellville 16, East 3

LOWELLVILLE

Lowellville jumped out to a 6-0 first-inning lead. Matt Hvisdak, Dylan Durkin, Nick Wellington, and Jake Rotz had multi-hit games for the Rockets.

Edison 6, Beaver Local 1

RICHMOND

Alec McBane threw a no-hitter for Edison. No other details were reported.

Western Reserve 7, United 5

HANOVERTON

Nick Niemi, Cody Wise, and Dan Windham had two RBIs each to keep the Blue Devils (4-0)unbeaten. Niemi was also the winning pitcher, allowing just two runs over the final three innings. United (6-2) was led by Parker Hydrick with two hits and a steal.

Poland 15, Boardman 5

POLAND

Ashley Wire (3-0) allowed five runs — two earned — and struck out a pair in five innings pitched. Wire had three hits and three RBIs. Kaili Gross had three hits and a home run for the Bulldogs (5-0). Cameron Lattanzio had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs while Lauren Sienkiewicz two hits and three RBIs. Vanessa Roush had two hits for the Spartans (2-3). Lauren Maughn and Madison Lester each had two hits.

LaBrae 14, Austintown Fitch 1

LEAVITTSBURG

LaBrae jumped out to a big lead early, scoring nine runs in the top of the first inning. Adrianna Geordan and Natalie Sisler both pitched in the win for the Vikings (6-0). Kaitlyn Evanko and Jenna Chmelik both pitched for the Falcons (4-3, 3-1 All-American Conference). Desi Allen had a home run and a double with five RBIs for the Vikings. Corrina Marrow and Natalie Sisler each had a single and a double. Marrow had two RBIs. Lainie Simons, Ashley Fuller, Abby Brown and Kaitlyn Evanko all recorded hits for the Falcons.

Lowellville 15, East 0

LOWELLVILLE

Madison Kelly worked four scoreless innings, struck out six and allowed one hit in four innings. Sammie Kelly struck out two batters in the fifth to complete the shutout for the Rockets (4-2). Madison Kelly had two hits, two runs scored and four stolen bases. KC Kelly had two doubles, three RBIs, three runs scored and three steals. Miranda McCann had a single for the Golden Bears (1-1).

Windham 10, Newbury 5

NEWBURY

Haley Hamilton tripled and had two singles, Sage Neidbalson singled twice and Avery Ryan had a triple in the Black Knights’ loss.

Edison 11, Beaver Local 1

RICHMOND

Kennadie McElroy struck out 10 in the Wildcats’ victory. Mikayla Petrisko homered twice and Alli Grimes and Hannah Christoff also hit home runs for Edison. Kylie Babel and Brooke Kmatz each had two hits for the Wildcats.

Cardinal Mooney 17, Warren JFK 0

BOARDMAN

Conchetta Rinaldi blasted a grand slam and a two-run homer to lead the Cardinals (5-0). CJ Sapp homered and drove in four runs and Caitie Perry had three hits and five RBIs. Gia DiFabio had two hits, and Lexi Diaz had two RBIs. Gia Divincenzo reached base three times, scored and had an RBI and Gia Diorio scored 3 runs. Freshman Alaina Francis pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10. Jennifer Sajnosky singled for the only hit by the Eagles (1-2).

Brookfield 12, Jackson-Milton 2

BROOKFIELD

Chelsea Williams went 2 for 3 with two bunt singles for the Blue Jays. Karli Dillinger, Abby Spalding and Dana Saunders all recorded a single for Jackson-Milton. Taylor Sahli hit a home run. Brookfield stats were not reported.

Western Reserve 12, United 1

HANOVERTON

Freshman Joanie Dagnan recorded her first high school win. Alyssa Serensky had a single and a double with four RBIs for the Blue Devils (3-2). Morgan Donithan had three hits and three RBIs. Madison Boyle had two hits and drove in a run while Kaitlyn Phillips had a double for the Eagles.

Sebring 17, Our Lady of the Elms 4

SEBRING

Addison Brendlinger drove in seven runs on three hits to lead Sebring. Emma Whaley struck out six in five innings pitched for the Trojans. Whaley also had three hits and three RBIs and Alexa Rockwell drove in a pair. Avian Austin struck out five in four innings for the Panthers.

West Branch 8, Carrollton 4

CARROLLTON

Sydney Mercer went 4 for 4 with two RBIs for the Warriors. West Branch starter Jordan Anderson struck out six and allowed three hits in over six innings of work. Delaney Rito, Peyton Alazaus, Jenna Rockwell and Grace Heath each drove in one run. Zoey Drake hit a double for Carrollton. Rikki Stidom took the loss, allowing nine hits and six walks in five innings.

LaBrae 14, Austintown Fitch 1

LEAVITTSBURG

Desi Allen homered and drove in three runs for LaBrae. Natalie Sisler and Corrina Morrow also drove in three runs for the Vikings. Arianna Geordan was the winning pitcher, allowing just thre hits and one run and striking out eight. Abby Brown drove in a run for Fitch. Lainie Simons and Ashley Fuller had a hit each.

Springfield 8, Girard 4

NEW MIDDLETOWN

Molly Pontius had a hit and two RBIs for Springfield. Jacqueline Kish added a pair of singles. Abby Joseph drove in two runs and had a double.

Lisbon 13, Mineral Ridge 12

LISBON

Courtney Bower was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Victoria Tedesco hit a triple for Mineral Ridge. Ariel Laneve and Riley Ladd each had two RBIs for the losing side.

Lakeside 7, Struthers 6

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP

Kalee Grimmett had two hits, an RBI and scored once and Sidney Griffith had an RBI triple and scored once for Lakeside. Mary Bayus had three hits and scored twice, Trinity Farrar had two hits including a double, three RBIs and scored once and Renee Leonard had two hits and an RBI for Struthers.

Bristol 16, Lordstown 4

BRISTOLVILLE

Kendyl Switzer had three hits, including a home run for Bristol. Kayla Switzer drove in four runs and Billie Miller had two RBIs for Bristol.

Columbiana 11, McDonald 5

COLUMBIANA

Columbiana scored 10 of its 11 runs in the first inning and had all eight of its hits in the same stretch. Tori Long hit a three-run home-run for the Clippers. McDonald’s Megan Ward was 4 for 4 including two doubles. Lucy Wolford struck out seven and walked two while taking the loss.

Badger 18, Pymatuning Valley 2

KINSMAN

Samantha Pykare led Badger with four hits and four RBIs. Brooke Morgan drove in three runs and Hunter Bengala and Lauren Elser drove in two each. Larrissa Kidd had two hits for Pymatuning Valley.

Liberty 17, Leetonia 7

LIBERTY

Savanna Houk had four hits, including a double and a triple, and teammates Attaya Rhodes, Allyson Jones, Madison Weinreber and Alyssa Helco each had three hits in the Leopards’ victory. Houk had four RBIs and Weireber and Jones each drove in three runs. Weinreber and Makenzie McBride each had a double. Rhodes scattered nine hits for the victory. Chloe Dale, Gracie Duko and Megan Rosko each had two hits for the Bears. Rosko had a double and Duko had two RBIs.

Isabella Kelty had four goals, Tara Santoro had two and and Shianne Donnarummno and Geena Cinaciola each had a goal as the Cardinals (5-2) beat the Comets. Mara Guerrieri had 12 saves for Canfield.

Lexi Saunders led the Cardinals (7-1) with five goals and four assists. Mia Stana, Nicole Rotunno, Anna Wollet and Mariah Farragher each had two goals. Maeghan Williams, Annie Daprile, and Lucy Graziano each scored once.
