Kindergartners at Poland Union Elementary School performed in their annual musical performance on March 7.

Music teacher Dana Emery said the students had been practicing for the performance since the beginning of January.

“I see each class once a week for 40 minutes,” Emery said. “However with days off and snow days that really cut into the practice time.”

Five classes of about 24 students participated in the performance, which has been going on annually for the past four years.

Emery said that the kindergarten music program was postponed for a while due to a lack of funding after a levy failed to pass.

However, the program is back in full, and led by Emery.

“The performance was basically a musical so there were speaking parts, solos, duets, singing and dancing,” Emery said.

Students danced and sung for community members, even utilizing props purchased for the performance by the school.

“We ordered cozy special friends, which are small stuffed animals, because it was the name of one of their songs,” Emery said. “We ordered so everyone had the same one and there was no competition that way.”

Emery said that the animals were attached to lanyards, that she used for each grade to prevent students from accidently dropping or kicking them.

“The lanyards I use with almost every grade level: kazoos with first grade, recorders with fourth grade and now kindergarten,” Emery said.
