Glenwood Junior High School performed “Shrek the Musical Junior” on March 28.

Rachel Ruggieri directed the show with a cast and crew of 52 students.

“The students have blown me away,” Ruggieri said. “Their mentality for this is above what I expected for a seventh- and eighth-grade production.”

Students auditioned for the play last year, and have been in rehearsals since December.

“It’s been a while but it takes a little bit longer to do a middle school production because they are new to this,” Ruggieri said.

Fifty-two students are involved in the production, with 38 students acting in the show.

The role of Shrek was played by student Ethan Blevins and Fiona is played by Genevieve Quinlan.

“We actually weren’t going to do Shrek here we were going to do the Little Mermaid,” Ruggieri said. “We bumped ‘Little Mermaid’ up to the high school. Shrek was a happy surprise because we had the perfect cast for this year.”

She said that the show was a surprise to her because of the dedication and skill level of the middle school students.

“They are taking the acting and bringing it to the professional level,” Ruggieri said. “They are not only working here but they are working at home.”

The show was performed March 28 and 29 at Glenwood Junior High School.
