Gathering Place event set for April 8

The Lord of Life Church, 550 North Broad Street, will hold its monthly Gathering Place event at 11 a.m. on April 8. Robert Schaeffer, coordinator of the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Senior Services, will speak on current scams in the area. In addition, Buckeye Hospice will have a nurse available to provide free blood pressure readings. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is held on the second Monday of every month. Different games and activities are offered each month. Easter egg hunt at Lord of Life Church

The Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 North Broad Street, will hold an Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. on April 13. The event is open to children 10 and under. A designated handicapped accessible area will be available.

Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8

The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. Spring getaway bus trip fundraiser

There will be a spring getaway bus trip fundraiser sponsored by the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic Committee with proceeds given to the American Cancer Society to The Rivers in Pittsburgh on May 11. The cost is $30 per person, $10 play and $5 food coupon from the casino. There is no guarantee the casino will pay these exact perks. The bus will leave Fab Limo, at 3681 Connecticut Avenue in Austintown, at 9 a.m. and will leave from The Rivers at 5 p.m. and arrive back at Fab Limo by 6:30 p.m. The deadline for reservations is May 9. Money is not refundable but the ticket can be transferred to another person. A valid photo ID is required. Western Reserve Knitting Guild to meet

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet at 7 p.m. on April 9, at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. Techniques on casting on and binding off will be demonstrated. Members are asked to bring knitting needles and yarn to participate. A trunk show of shawl and stick pins will be given. ABWA’s Mill Creek Chapter has April 9 meeting

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its April 9 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield, beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening will include southern baked chicken, Swiss steak, buttered parsley potatoes, peas and carrots, tossed salad, apple sauce, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. St. Christine Scout Troop 22 hosts pancake breakfast

St. Christine Scout Troop 22 is hosting a pancake breakfast on April 14 at the St. Christine Parish Center, located at 3165 S. Schenley Ave. in Youngstown, from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. This pancake breakfast benefits Scout Troop 22 for summer camp/activities and other year-round program costs. The breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes with a variety of fruit toppings, sausage, scrambled eggs, milk, orange juice and coffee, and costs $7 per person, children 6 and under free. Tickets can be purchased at the door and carry out is available.

TeenXTreme blackout poetry contest

April is National Poetry Month, so indulge in some ‘creative destruction’ and express your inner poet during Canfield library hours. Create a poem by eliminating - blacking out - the words you don’t want from newspaper and magazine articles (or book pages) which are provided. Three winners will be chosen from entries throughout the county and awarded cash prizes. Contact a librarian for details. This program is for teens in grades seven through 12.

Kindergarten readiness stations

The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of April, stations feature preschool board games. Playing games is an easy and fun way to spend time together and they are also rich in learning opportunities. Board games can teach important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns and enjoying interaction with others. These skills are part of the social emotional domain of early learning. Stop by the Canfield branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station, play a game and help your child build these important skills.

Coupon swap

Drop in during Canfield library hours during the month of April to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This program is for adults.

Mah-Jongg Mondays

Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun every Monday in April from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets are not provided. This program is for adults.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Visit the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in April for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta move story time

Visit the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in April for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the young and restless, stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children may act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver.

Bonding with babies and books

Visit the Canfield library at 10 a.m. every Thursday in April for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.

Friends of PLYMC chair yoga

Visit the Canfield library for Friends of PLYMC chair yoga at 10 a.m. every Friday in April. Class is $10 a session and attendees can pay as they attend. This program is for adults.

Grab and go craft

Make a craft during Canfield library hours during the month of April to take home. This program is for children of all ages.

Family movie

Visit the Canfield library at 2:30 p.m. on April 6, for a Saturday movie matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7 years and younger must be with an adult.

Facebook for beginners

Visit the Canfield library at 10 a.m. on April 6, to learn how to connect with family and friends on Facebook. Help will be available to personalize your profile to be able to start posting, sharing and liking right away. For help setting up an account, contact the library before the class. Coloring for grown-ups

Tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups at 10 a.m. on April 8 at the Canfield library. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for adults and teens only.

True stories book club

True stories is the book club for people who want to read about some of the world’s most captivating real-life people and events. Visit the Canfield library at 6:30 p.m. on April 10, for a discussion of riveting nonfiction titles. The book selection for April is “In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote. This program is for adults.

Know your history

In order to understand the lives of ancestors, the question “What was it like to live back then?” must be asked. The answer can be found in history. The genealogy and local history librarian will survey these crucial collections at 6:30 p.m. on April 11 at the Canfield library. Microsoft Excel class 1

Learn the basics of using Microsoft Excel for creating simple and useful spreadsheets at 10 a.m. on April 12 at the Canfield library. This beginner’s class will cover setting up a spreadsheet and entering data. Some basic computer skills are required. The class will soon be followed by Microsoft Excel class 2. Spring sing

Visit the Canfield library at 11 a.m. on April 13, for a sing-a-long of some favorite songs led by students from the Canfield High School Honor Society. There will also be snacks, a musical craft and every child that attends will receive a kazoo while supplies last.

Lego my library

Visit the Canfield library at 2:30 p.m. on April 13, to enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This program is for children ages 6 and up.

Spring painting party

Visit the Canfield library at 6 p.m. on April 15, to create a painting as you follow along step-by-step. Snacks will be provided. Space is limited and registration is required by calling 330-744-8636 and asking for the Canfield library. This program is for children in grades kindergarten through four.

Learn to line dance

Dance your way to good health at 6:30 p.m. on April 16 at the Canfield. Line dances are easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward, and you do not have to coordinate your movements with a partner. This class will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines and will help you burn calories at the same time.

Blood pressure screening

Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will host a blood pressure screening at the Canfield library from 1-2 p.m. on April 17.

Lego my library

Visit the Canfield library at 6 p.m. on April 17, to enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This program is for children ages 6 and up.

Visit the Canfield library at 6:30 p.m. on April 18, to make a DIY tassel bookmark, ready for springtime reading. Bring your own scissors. This program is for adults and teens.

Pineapple cake day

Visit the Canfield library at 6:30 p.m. on April 24, to learn about how pineapples are grown, processed and handled to make this dessert. Learn to cut a pineapple by example and make an origami pineapple. Get a taste of pineapple upside-down cake, too. This program is for adults and teens.

Sit’n’stitch

Sit and stitch with others at the library at 11 a.m. on April 24 at the Canfield library. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your unfinished objects, such as quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet, and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This program is for adults.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Canfield library on April 25 from 2-7 p.m. (Red Cross bus will be in parking lot accepting donations). For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or register online at www.RedCrossBlood.org.

Off the shelves book club

Visit the Canfield library for a monthly book club discussion of titles chosen ‘off the shelves’ of the library’s book club room. Join the discussion with these upcoming reads: April, “The Immortalists” by Chloe Benjamin and May, “Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II” by Liza Mundy. Attend either the morning session at 11 a.m. on April 25, or the evening session at 6:30 p.m. on April 30, or come to both. This program is for adults.

Microsoft Word class 1

Visit the Canfield library to learn the basic skills of Microsoft Word at 10 a.m. on April 26. This beginner’s class will cover the Word menus and functions like cut/copy/paste, font, save and print. Visit the Canfield library at 6 p.m. on April 29, to plan an exciting trip to Chicago by learning about city destinations including Willis Tower (formerly Sears), Shedd Aquarium, Millennium Park with the Bean, Wrigley Field and Buckingham Fountain. Learn about transit systems, the Magnificent Mile and more. Bring your travel expert advice tips to this program to share with others. This program is for adults and teens.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Tri-Gold chapter of ABWA to have 15th anniversary

The Tri-Gold chapter of ABWA will host its 15th anniversary with the theme Crystal Showers Sprinkle Flowers. The event will take place on April 10 at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. This is an evening dinner meeting with a social period beginning at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Reservations are due by April and can be made by contacting Sharon Pasquale at 330-793-6208. Entertainment will be announced. The cost to attend is $21.50 with the choice of stuffed flounder or chicken francaise, swiss steak jardinere, tossed salad, red skin potatoes and a dessert of cake and ice cream.

Friendly Squares host April square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly local square dance on April 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. 1970’s Disco will be the theme. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Evening with the Easter Bunny

Boardman Park will present an evening with the Easter Bunny from 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 10 and 11. Tickets will go on sale at the park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting March 11. Tickets may also be obtained by calling the park office at 330-726-8105 to pay by credit card, or online at www.boardmanpark.com. Tickets are $7 for Boardman residents and $9 for non-residents. Children 2 and under are free. The evening includes dinner, arts and crafts and a family photo with the Easter Bunny.

Cardinal Mooney High School announces 16th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 16th annual fundraising auction as April 13. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, Youngstown, between 5:30 and 11 p.m. Cocktails and silent auction to begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. This year’s honorary chairwoman is CMHS teacher, mentor and Cardinals sports enthusiast, Nancy Shugart. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition

YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. ‘The Twilight Zone’ comes to Canfield

The Canfield Players will present “The Twilight Zone” at 7 p.m. on April 12-13 and at 2 p.m. April 14, at Canfield High School. The cast will enact four episodes of the original television series. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by contacting Regina Reynolds at 330-533-5507.

All Inclusive Egg Hunt offered on April 7

Rulli Bros. Market, located at 8025 South Ave. in Boardman, will be the location for the second annual All Inclusive Egg Hunt. The egg hunt will take place on April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. The egg hunt is open to children in the Mahoning County, and there will be an alternative egg hunt for children with special needs inside of the store. Volunteers needed for fine arts show

A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle

Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the raffle at 7 p.m. A Chinese auction, games of chance and 50/50 drawings will also be available.
