AUCTIONS
Western Reserve High School PTO will host its sixth annual auction fundraiser at 6 p.m. Friday at Western Reserve High School, 13850 Akron-Canfield Road, Berlin Center, in the cafetorium. Admission is free, and dinner will be available for $8. Doors open at 5. Basket auctions, gift cards and prizes also will be available. Holy Apostles Parish, 854 Wilson Ave., Youngstown, will host a Spring Fling Bingo and Card Party at 2 p.m. April 28 in the social hall. St. George Croatian Center, 3200 Vestal Road, Youngstown, will be the site for dance classes that will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday and April 15, in preparation of the Ninth Annual Simply Slavic Festival scheduled for June 15. Doors open at 5 p.m. Lessons are sponsored by the Croatian Fraternal Union of America Lodge 66 and are taught by Kathy White, director of Od Srca Adult Tamburitzans; and Aundrea Cika Heschmeyer, director of Polish Youngstown. Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will host its 13th annual “Plant the Seed to Read” Children’s Book Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks. The event, “Reading’s My Superpower,” will host authors, illustrators, storytellers, readers, giveaways and more. The event is free and open to the community.
FUNDRAISERS
Austintown Fitch High School’s wrestling team will host a quarter ticket raffle April 11 at the Youngstown Saxon Club, 710 Meridian Road. Doors open at 5 p.m.; the raffle starts at 6. Raffle tickets, which will be sold by the sheet, will cost approximately one quarter each. There will be more than 80 prizes, gift baskets and door prizes. Food will be for sale by the Saxon Club. Girard Multi-Generational Center’s annual fundraiser “Cars are the Stars 5” will include two special raffles this year. Winners will be announced the day of the show, June 1 (rain date, June 8). Tickets are $6 for each raffle and must be purchased by May 17. Tickets will be $8 at the door. Registration the day of the show will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the show will be from 1 to 3. The first raffle is for a Flat Screen TV (sponsored by Rep. Glenn W. Holmes, D-63) and the second is for a $250 Visa gift card (sponsored by Windsor House Inc.). Winners do not need to be present, and all proceeds will benefit the center. St. Vincent de Paul Society Mahoning County District will host its Spring Gala from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica social hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel Ave., Youngstown. Guest speaker will be Sue Thomas who will speak about her years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and her charity, Silent Night, which collects coats for the homeless. Thomas has been deaf since childhood and became an expert in lip reading and did undercover surveillance for the FBI. Legacy Dog Rescue and F5RS - Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies, & Feathered Friends will host its Picture with a Rescue Bunny event at Family Video, 4385 Kirk Road, Austintown, from noon to 4 p.m. April 13. LIVE New Wilmington will sponsor The Tour de Donut, a bike ride that will take place June 8. Riders will depart from Memorial Field House at Westminster College. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and cost is $20 per rider, which includes a limited edition T-shirt. Various routes will include 10 miles, two 30-mile choices, and a hill challenge. Sutliff Museum will host its second annual “Nurturing Pathways to Freedom” lecture series Saturday with a presentation titled, “Spring Hill and the Underground Railroad” by Sammy Kay, director of Spring Hill Historic Home in Massillon. Spring Hill was built in 1821 but the family that lived there opened the home up to freedom seekers before the door actually existed. This presentation will explore what the Underground Railroad looked like while it was still forming plus the impact one family had on the area’s abolitionist activities. This is the first of three free programs in the series and will be presented in the Thomas Meeting Room on the second floor of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library. Trumbull County Travel Club will sponsor a motor coach mini vacation to Holland, Mich., from May 7 to 9. Holland, located on Lake Macatawa, plants millions of blooming tulips which will greet members in this town named the “Best Small Town Festival” in the USA. Reflecting on the area’s Dutch heritage, Windmill Island is on the agenda as well as the DeKlomp Wooden Shoe & Delft Factory tour. There will be time to experience traditional Klompen, photograph the Big Red Lighthouse and sit in comfortable seats for the Volksparade. Two breakfasts and two dinners are included along with the Fiddle Fire Show and the Dazzle Dinner Theater. The Travel Club is open to any person who wishes to travel and make new friends. There are no fees to join. The club has been together since 2000 and consists of people over 21. Members meet twice a year at area sites to discuss upcoming trips. All trips leave from one site and use motor coaches, trains, air and will sometimes incorporate cruising.
