Challenger Baseball reps to visit Curbstone

BEAVER TOWNSHIP

Jim Colaluca and Sam Colaluca from Challenger Baseball will be the guest speakers at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road.

The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

Challenger Baseball is baseball for children and young adults with special needs.

Applications are being accepted for nominations for the 2019 Hall of Fame Class that will be inducted on May 5. For an application to nominate, call 330-506-6774 or 330-792-2272. The application deadline is Nov. 17.

Poland selling tickets for East football game

POLAND

The Poland High School Athletic Office will be selling general admission football tickets beginning Monday for Friday’s game against East.

Tickets are available weekdays from 12:30-4 p.m.

Tickets also will be sold at Trolio’s T-Shirts weekdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Advance student tickets cost $4 and adult tickets cost $6. All tickets at the gate will cost $7.

YSU volleyball team drops match to IUPUI

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State volleyball team lost a pair of sets by two points and fell 3-0 to IUPUI on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.

Aleah Hughes totaled a team-high nine kills, and she added 17 digs for the Penguins. Morgan Tippie had eight kills with no errors in 17 attempts, and Margaux Thompson posted a match-high 21 digs while playing in just two of the sets.

Maggie Gibson had 11 kills and 14 digs to pace IUPUI.

YSU will host Northern Kentucky at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Crew, Union play to scoreless draw

COLUMBUS

Andre Blake had two saves for his 10th shutout of the season to help the Philadelphia Union tie the Columbus Crew 0-0 on Saturday night.

Blake preserved the shutout with a leaping save of Harrison Afful’s attempt in the 90th minute.

Zack Steffen had his 10th shutout of the season for Columbus (13-9-9) without making a save.

Video review overturned a first-half goal for Philadelphia (14-12-5) in the 38th minute. Columbus’ Jonathan Mensah knocked in an own goal, but referee Drew Fischer determined that the Union’s Cory Burke fouled Lalas Abubakar while battling for the long ball in the buildup.

Packers sign rookie CB Brown to roster

GREEN BAY, Wis.

The Green Bay Packers have signed rookie cornerback Tony Brown to the active roster from the practice squad after placing defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson on injured reserve.

Brown had joined the Packers’ practice squad after being cut by the Los Angeles Chargers following training camp. The 6-foot Brown had 89 tackles and three interceptions in 51 games at Alabama, where he also a valuable contributor on special teams.

Wilkerson had surgery this week after suffering a season-ending ankle injury during last week’s 31-17 loss at Washington. The signing of the veteran free agent in the offseason was intended to strengthen what was already a solid defensive line.

Green Bay also signed defensive lineman Deon Simon to the practice squad. The 6-foot-4 Simon spent the first three weeks of the season on the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad.

Former Maple Leafs F Terrion dies at 58

TORONTO

Greg Terrion, the former NHL forward who played six seasons for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1980s, has died. He was 58.

The Maple Leafs confirmed Terrion’s death Saturday.

Terrion, from Marmora, had 93 goals and 150 assists in 561 NHL games in eight seasons with the Los Angeles Kings and Maple Leafs. He had two goals and nine assists in 35 playoff games.
