District fires bus driver who got lost on 1st day with students on board

MONTGOMERY, N.J.

A New Jersey school district has fired a bus driver who got lost on the first day of school.

Montgomery schools Superintendent Nancy Gartenberg says the unidentified male driver was unfamiliar with the route and failed to go on a required practice run.

The driver left Orchard Hill Elementary School with 37 students Sept. 6 and later became lost.

Jennifer Lafaman told the school board she got in her car to find her son, a kindergartener, when the bus didn’t arrive.

Lafaman says she found the bus “nowhere near the bus route” two hours after it was supposed to drop off her son.

School officials have issued an apology and say drivers will be required to report to the transportation office next year to ensure that they know their routes.

Nevada elementary school selling chicken to save teacher position

HENDERSON, Nev.

A Nevada elementary is trying to save a teacher position through a unique fundraiser – selling chicken.

KVVU-TV reports parents at Lamping Elementary in Henderson, Nev., had a fundraiser last week at a Chick-Fil-A in Las Vegas with the hopes of funding at least one teacher job.

Some Clark County schools are facing serious challenges due to teacher shortages to budget cuts.

Lamping Elementary Principal Robert Solomon says the school had to cut three positions due to lack of enrollment or decrease in enrollment.

He says the school saw an additional $83,000 budget cut.

Parent Lori Biunno says parents want to keep classroom sizes small.

Proceeds from the Las Vegas Chick-Fil-A sales go to the school.
