Mahoning Valley REIA to meet on Oct. 8
The Mahoning Valley Real Estate Investors Association will meet on Oct. 8 from 5:30-9 p.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center, located at 375 Canfield Poland Road, for its monthly meeting. The topic will be “The Upsides of a Downturn: Stratagies for Thriving in a Changing Market.” This month’s instructor is Vena Jones-Cox, past president of that National Real Estate Investors Association and 25-year veteran of the investing business. This seminar gives participants the opportunity to look at the local trends, numbers and strategies, and to meet others who are real estate successes in this market. Mooney senior earns perfect ACT score and named a National Merit Semifinalist
Cardinal Mooney High School senior Matthew Rossi was named a National Merit Semifinalist by scoring a 1490 out of a possible 1520 on his PSAT. In addition, Rossi received a perfect ACT Composite score of 36. Being named National Merit Semifinalist puts Rossi in contention for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships. His ACT score is earned by only one-tenth of 1 percent of the more than 2 million students that take the exam annually. His scores on these tests, along with his impressive GPA, have been accomplished while he maintains a full extracurricular and athletic schedule including CMHS soccer captain, co-president of Interact Club, member of the tennis team, Academic Challenge, Service Club, Gardening Club, theatre department and debate team member, along with his service as a school music minister.
Quarter auction event to take place on Oct. 13
The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its third annual quarter auction on Oct. 13 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m. The event is bring your own beverage and you can bring your own food as no food or beverage will be sold. Tickets are $10 each. Tickets for a lottery wreath and 50/25/25 raffle will be available. The proceeds will benefit local charities. Bring your quarters, friends and have some fun. Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion
The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015. Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Friendly Squares Halloween square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Oct. 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cueing the line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. ABWA chapter to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Oct. 9 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes roast pork, creamed chicken over biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans with garlic, tossed salad, applesauce, Jell-O and dessert. Cardinal Mooney to host seventh- and eighth-grade parent night
Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
Chaney alumni to celebrate 80th birthdays at luncheon
The Chaney High School Class of 1956 will meet for a luncheon on Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Davidson’s Restaurant, located on State Route 62 in Cornersburg, Meals will be ordered from the menu. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.
Celebrate teen read week with Mindy McGinnis
Help the Poland library celebrate Teen Read Week, which is a national event from Oct. 7-13, with award-winning, Ohio author and blogger, Mindy McGinnis on Oct. 8 at 9 a.m. McGinnis writes across multiple genres including post-apocalyptic, historical, thriller, contemporary, mystery and fantasy. “A Madness so Discreet,” McGinnis’s gothic historical set in an insane asylum, won the Edgar award for Best Teen Mystery in 2015. She also manages a blog titled, “Writer, Writer, Pants on Fire,” which features author interviews, writing advice, query critiques and help in navigating the seas of the publishing world. You can also listen to her weekly podcast that features interviews with published authors.
Mushroom Guru: Walt Sturgeon
Mushroom guru and author Walt Sturgeon will present on the myriad of colors, forms and habitats of our native macro fungi at the Poland library on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. Edible and toxic species will be shown. Folklore and examples of bioluminescent species, insectivorous fungi and hallucinogenic mushrooms will also be presented. Walt is a member and trustee of the Ohio Mushroom Society which has been affiliated with the North American Mycological Association since 1982. This event is for adults.

Lego Mindstorms - build a robot
Build and program a Lego Mindstorms GRIPP3R Robot at this event on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. The GRIPP3R robot is constructed for some heavy-duty lifting. Beginning conversational French

Poland Friends of the Library meeting and presentation
Melissa Ames, Vice President of Better Business Services, will present “Scams, Frauds, and How to Protect Yourself” at the next meeting of the Poland Friends of the Library on Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. An annual potluck picnic will follow. Dessert will be provided.
Yoga class
The Poland library will offer a yoga class every Wednesday in October at 5 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session. This event is for adults.
Gilchrist to be honored
Stephanie Gilchrist, Executive Director of Inspiring Minds Youngstown, will be honored as “Woman of the Year” at a special event during National Business Women’s Week Æ, sponsored by the Youngstown Business and Professional Women. The event will take place on Oct. 16 at The Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Dr. Anne McMahon Scholarship Award, which is awarded annually to a deserving female student furthering her education at Youngstown State University. Retiring your flag
During the month of September, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal. Valley Legacy Awards 2018 nominees announced
Nominees were recently announced for the 2018 Valley Legacy Awards. Now in its 14th year, the annual event honors civic-minded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley. The 22 nominees will be recognized and the Valley Legacy Awards presented to the winning Outstanding Seniors and Outstanding Advocates at a luncheon on Oct. 10. Those nominated by members of the community are: Outstanding Senior Award for Professional Excellence - Elder George Dial (Austintown), Stephana Liptak (Poland), Rich Morgan (Boardman) and Outstanding Senior Advocate - Laurie Antunze and Molly (Boardman).
