ASSOCIATIONS

American Association of University Women Youngstown Branch will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 6 in room 3418 at the Williamson College of Business Administration, 221 N. Hazel St., Youngstown. Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its Oct. 9 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30. The menu includes roast pork, creamed chicken over biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans with garlic, tossed salad, applesauce, Jell-o and dessert. CLUBS

First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown Luncheon Speaker Series will host Dianne Bergant, CSA, on Thursday at The Georgetown in Boardman. Sr. Dianne, professor of Biblical Studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, will speak on “Pope Francis’ Document on Divine Mercy.” The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. Cost is $18. Round Table Woodcarvers meet every Thursday from 9 to 11:45 a.m. at the Senior Center, 1110 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. Anyone interested in learning about carving is welcome to attend. For information, call 330-792-4355.

Steel Valley Ukers invites anyone interested in learning the ukulele to attend their meetups. Meetings take place once a month at the Austintown Library, usually on a Saturday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. and also at the Michael Kusalaba library on the West Side once a month on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Beginner instruction is offered during the first half of each session, followed by more complex group tunes and solos the last half. The mood is relaxed and loosely structured. Late arrivals and early departures are fine when done in a manner that does not disrupt what is going on in the room. GUILDS

Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Rotary Community Building, Fair Park, Canfield. Anyone interested in attending is asked to take a tape measure, something to write with and a favorite fitting sweater (commercially made or hand-knit). LIBRARY FRIENDS

Friends of the Poland Library will meet Oct. 8 in the Poland Library Meeting Room, beginning with a short meeting at 9:30 a.m. followed by a program and picnic. Melissa Ames, vice president of the Better Business Bureau, will present “Scams, Frauds, and How to Protect Yourself.” Hostesses will be Dana Cina, Mary Lou Carbon, Beverly Gibson and Sue Perry. Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs are accepted at each meeting for the Poland Friends Book Cart. The meeting is open to the public, and new members are welcome. Membership dues are $10 per year. Money raised by the Poland Friends benefits children’s reading programs at Poland Library.

POLITICAL CLUBS

Trumbull County Federated Democratic Women’s Club will meet Monday at 6 p.m. at Perkins Restaurant in Niles. Guest speaker will be April Caraway of the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board. The club’s annual card party will take place Oct. 14 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Howland Community Church, 198 Niles-Cortland Road. Warren Women’s Connection, an affiliate of Stonecroft Ministries, will host a luncheon titled “Parley-vous Francais” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at DiLucia’s Banquet Center, 2610 Elm Road NE. Featured will be Ron Saffell, retired French teacher, who will speak on “Learning a Language Can Stimulate Your Brain.” Inspirational speaker is Karen Burkhart, and the topic is “Breaking Up With Approval Seeking.” She is a composer and singer and also will provide music. Cost is $10 for first-time attendees and $13 for all others. Youngstown South Christian Women’s Connection will meet for a “Welcoming Fall” luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Boardman William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 12 at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room, 3135 Belmont Ave., Liberty Township. State Sen. Joe Schiavoni, D-33rd, will share memories of growing up in the Mahoning Valley, his boxing career, his life in politics and his recent run for governor. Cost is $5 for members and $6 for nonmembers. Grief Recovery Instructional Support Groups will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home Care Center, next to the funeral home, on Main Street in Hubbard. The groups are led by Phillip Roland, grief counselor for the funeral home, and are open to anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one. NAMI Mahoning Valley offers Connections support groups for adults living with mental illness, in a discussion format, to promote self-disclosure in a safe, relaxed, supportive and confidential environment. NAMI Mahoning Valley also offers Family Support Groups that provide information and support for family members and friends of individuals with mental illness.
