Boardman’s Dunham claims first at Patriot Invitational

On Sept. 22, Boardman’s Mitchel Dunham raced to a first place finish ahead of 310 other competitors at the 31st Patriot Invitational hosted by Valley Forge High School on the campus of Cuyahoga Community College in Parma.

The Spartans finished third out of 19 schools and improved their 2018 record to 92-52.

The Spartans placed five runners in the top 50, with Dunham’s time of 16:28, sophomore Frank Bero at 17:19 for 13th, sophomore Caydin Newberry at a new career best time of 17:53 in 26th, sophomore Justin Maloney in a new personal best at 18:03 in 35th and sophomore Anthony Marshall at 18:23 in 49th.

“We had a really unacceptable performance at The Spartan Invitational,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips. “This past Monday I challenged our guys to learn from it and build off it and today we took a lot of positive steps towards racing like a Boardman team should.”

The Spartan junior varsity team placed fourth out of 11 schools and ran their season mark to 71-38. Leading the junior varsity squad was junior Jackson Lipka, junior Steven Moradian, senior Andrew Beichner, freshman Ben Alvarico and senior Payton Torres.

Setting new personal bests on Sept. 22 were seniors Cameron Maloney at 18:40 and Payton Torres at 19:11. Juniors setting new personal records were Steven Moradian at 18:37, Jackson Lipka at 18:27 and Zander Schobel at 19:43. Sophomores earning new career bests were Justin Maloney at 18:03, Caydin Newberry at 17:53, Michael Halchuck at 19:35 and Beau Gorby at 18:29. Freshmen setting a new personal record were Jake Blazina at 22:28, Dan Chiaberta at 21:49, Aiden Chunn at 22:12, Josh Cubarrubia at 23:06, Jack Graff at 19:40 and Noah Shurell at 21:59.
