Mahoning Valley REIA to meet on Oct. 8
The Mahoning Valley Real Estate Investors Association will meet on Oct. 8 from 5:30-9 p.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center, located at 375 Canfield Poland Road, for its monthly meeting. The topic will be “The Upsides of a Downturn: Stratagies for Thriving in a Changing Market.” This month’s instructor is Vena Jones-Cox, past president of that National Real Estate Investors Association and 25-year veteran of the investing business. This seminar gives participants the opportunity to look at the local trends, numbers and strategies, and to meet others who are real estate successes in this market. Stoneman named National Merit Semifinalist
Alex Stoneman, a senior at Ursuline High School, was recently notified he is a National Merit Semifinalist. Stoneman scored a 1510 out of a possible 1520 on the PSAT last fall. More than 1.6 million juniors throughout the country took the exam. Stoneman scored within the top 1 percent of the juniors who took the test last October. Stoneman is an honor student, where he currently has a 4.60 GPA, is a member of the executive board of student council, is a student ambassador, co-captain of the boys’ golf team, captain of several academic competition teams at Ursuline, a member of Students of Stewardship and is a member of the speech and debate team where he was the state champion in Congressional Debate in 2017 and state runner-up in 2018. He placed 22nd in the country in his debate category at the National Speech and Debate tournament in June. Stoneman is also a member of Attorney General DeWine’s Teen Advisory Board.
Local church hosts trash and treasure sale
Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market St. in Boardman, will host a fall trash and treasure sale on Oct. 3 and 4 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Oct. 4 will be bargain-bag day, but lunch is available on Wednesday only.
Quarter auction event to take place on Oct. 13
The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its third annual quarter auction on Oct. 13 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, at 764 Fifth St. in Struthers. The doors open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m. The event is bring your own food and beverage. No food or beverage will be sold. Tickets are $10 each. Tickets for a lottery wreath and 50/25/25 raffle will be available. The proceeds will benefit local charities. Bring your quarters, friends and have some fun. Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion
The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015. Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Friendly Squares Halloween square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Oct. 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cueing the line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Local ABWA chapter to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Oct. 9 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes roast pork, creamed chicken over biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans with garlic, tossed salad, applesauce, Jell-O and dessert. Myrddin Winery hosts dog rescue event
Join Legacy Dog Rescue and bring your dog for Yappy Hour time at Myrddin Winery on Sept. 29 from 2-6 p.m. For $10 you get three tastings and a glass of Sangria! You can even make it a float (ice cream is an additional charge). For $5, your dog can get his own meal and pup safe drink. Cardinal Mooney to host seventh- and eighth-grade parent night
Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

This program on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library will cover important options current Medicare beneficiaries will need to know before changing Medicare plans during open enrollment. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Join the Boardman library on Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This is a holiday program and children may attend in costume. This event is for children who are ages 2-3.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one hour program.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, at the Boardman library every Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Join the Boardman library on Oct. 3, 10 and 24 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Pumpkin patch night owl stories
This event, which takes place at the Boardman library on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., will feature fall stories and a craft for children ages 4-5. Preschoolers must attend with an adult to this 30-minute story time.
Lego my library
Meet at the Boardman library on Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Chaney alumni to celebrate 80th birthdays at luncheon
The Chaney High School Class of 1956 will meet for a luncheon on Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Davidson’s Restaurant, located on State Route 62 in Cornersburg, Meals will be ordered from the menu. There will be a blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Boardman library Oct. 1 from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Friends of the Boardman Library to meet
There will be a Friends of the Boardman Library meeting and presentation on Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. This presentation will be “The Wizard of Oz by the Wicked Witch of the West,” presented by Carol Weakland.
Retiring your flag
During the month of September, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal. Valley Legacy Awards 2018 nominees announced
Nominees were recently announced for the 2018 Valley Legacy Awards. Now in its 14th year, the annual event honors civic-minded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley. The 22 nominees will be recognized and the Valley Legacy Awards presented to the winning Outstanding Seniors and Outstanding Advocates at a luncheon on Oct. 10. Those nominated by members of the community are: Outstanding Senior Award for Professional Excellence - Elder George Dial (Austintown), Stephana Liptak (Poland), Rich Morgan (Boardman) and Outstanding Senior Advocate - Laurie Antunze and Molly (Boardman). Akron Children’s Hero Patients inspire Akron Marathon runners
When the going gets tough for runners in the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron marathon, half marathon and team relay presented by FirstEnergy on Sept. 29, they can find inspiration in the faces of this year’s featured Hero Patients from Akron Children’s Hospital. For the third year, more than a dozen patients were selected to represent the hospital as part of its role as the title beneficiary of the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series. The patients, who inspire with their stories of triumph over medical challenges, will cheer runners and walkers along the course. The patients will be featured in “hero zones” along the 26.2 mile route. Heroes will be accompanied by their parents, siblings and, in some cases, classmates, medical providers and friends at their zones, as well as representatives of the zone’s sponsors. Night market to begin in June
The Mission Night Market inaugural year festivities will occur at the Huntington Place plaza, located at 1393 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on the second Friday of every month June through October, from 6-10 p.m. Thes last remaining date is Oct. 12. Proceeds to benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Vendors spots are available for $50 per 10 by 10 tent space and $100 for food trucks and the several 10 by 20 tent spaces. However, participation is by application process. MNM Committee limits the overall number and type of vendors for each event and vendors must be approved to participate.
