HOWLAND

Camryn Kohout believes she has the gift of vision. She showed off that ability in leading the Canfield girls soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Howland at Francis Jennings Stadium Monday night.

Kohout scored in the fourth minute to put the Cardinals (8-1-1, 4-0 in All-American Conference Red Tier) on the board.

“(Kohout) is a defender and she started her run a good distance back,” Canfield coach Phil Simone said. “She dribbled, had a nice give-and-go, received the pass back from [Marisa Scheetz] and had a nice shot. That’s the kind of stuff we’ve talked about and tried to work on. It was nice to see it happen.”

It was that vision that Kohout credits with the opportunity.

“I can see the field pretty well,” Kohout said. “I did see that developing. I knew if I could get up there fast enough, my teammates would see it, too. It developed the way it was supposed to.”

There’s a good reason Scheetz saw the play developing the same way Kohout did.

“Obviously, it was hard because of the rain,” Kohout said. “[The goal] was pretty cool because Marisa and I play club together. We see the other one making a run and we know where to go on the field, what the timing should be. It’s nice to be able to do that with a teammate and have success.”

That moment was almost surreal for Kohout.

“I didn’t even realize [what we had just done] until five minutes after,” Kohout said. “Then, I thought, ‘Wow! I just scored a goal!’ It wasn’t just me. It was my teammates. If they wouldn’t have made the passes, I wouldn’t have been able to finish the way I did.”

Morgan Carey added a goal in the 40th minute of the second half for Canfield as the Tigers [8-2-2, 4-1] were trying to make a push for the late equalizer.

“Our girls generally play good defense,” Howland coach Dan Daniluk said. “We take pride in limiting the number of goals we allow. When Canfield scored that first goal, we made a fundamental mistake and Canfield capitalized. The second one was mine because we were pushing forward and they countered.”

The Cardinals controlled the action most of the night with both their offense and defense.

“We do a good job of possessing to begin with,” Simone said. “We spread the field, which is tough to do with the type of field conditions we had. We do a good job of holding our shape, which puts us in good position to attack.”

Howland attempted two shots in the first half.

“They’re the better team,” Daniluk said. “They won the ball more than we did, they scored more goals.”

The Canfield defense allowed just three shots on goal over the course of 80 minutes.

“That’s one of the things we try to limit,” Simone said. “We don’t want the other team getting shots off. We pressure on the [offensive] end to keep the ball as far away from the goal as possible.”
