Man accused of threatening Trump is set for hearing

AKRON

A Pennsylvania man accused of making threats against President Donald Trump and law enforcement officials has been scheduled for a detention hearing in Ohio, where he was arrested recently.

Shawn Christy, of McAdoo, Pa., had an initial hearing Monday in federal court in Akron where he requested the detention hearing set for Oct. 1.

A federal warrant was issued June 19 for the 27-year-old Christy in connection to Facebook posts allegedly threatening to shoot Trump and a district attorney in Pennsylvania. Officials say he also threatened others. Christy was arrested Friday near Columbus after a multistate manhunt.

Virginia prisons to ban tampons for female visitors

RICHMOND, Va.

Women who visit inmates at Virginia prisons will be barred from wearing tampons or menstrual cups under a new policy stemming from concerns about contraband, the state Department of Corrections said Monday.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections said the policy set to become effective next month is aimed at preventing contraband – including drugs – from being smuggled into prisons.

Inmate advocates sharply criticized the policy, saying it violates the privacy rights of female visitors. The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia urged DOC Chief Harold Clarke to reverse the policy.

Newly released records show lead-up to parking lot shooting

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.

Florida authorities Monday released hundreds of new pages in the case of a white man accused of fatally shooting a black man in a parking lot dispute in July.

According to a transcript of Michael Drejka’s interview with Pinellas County Sheriff’s detectives, he said that if Markeis McGlockton had retreated, or even stayed still, he wouldn’t have used his gun. But McGlockton’s girlfriend, who was a witness to the incident, said McGlockton moved back.

The 70-page interview of Drejka sheds light on his thinking in the seconds before the shooting.

Prosecutors on Aug. 13 charged Drejka with manslaughter. He’s been released from the county jail on $100,000 bail.

Officials disappointed over grizzly protection

BILLINGS, Mont.

Wyoming officials say they’re disappointed grizzly bears are again getting federal protections instead of being hunted in the state.

A judge in Montana on Monday blocked hunts planned in Wyoming and Idaho and put Yellowstone-area grizzlies back on the threatened species list.

Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead says the state has spent some $50 million on grizzly bear recovery and management and that grizzlies should be considered a conservation success.

Trump: No statehood for Puerto Rico with critics in office

WASHINGTON

President Donald Trump on Monday declared himself an “absolute no” on statehood for Puerto Rico as long as critics such as San Juan’s mayor remain in office, the latest broadside in his feud with members of the U.S. territory’s leadership.

Trump lobbed fresh broadsides at San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, a critic of his administration’s response to hurricanes on the island last year, during a radio interview with Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera that aired Monday.

“With the mayor of San Juan as bad as she is and as incompetent as she is, Puerto Rico shouldn’t be talking about statehood until they get some people that really know what they’re doing,” Trump said.
