Dayton 42, Davidson 21
DAYTON
Jack Cook threw for two touchdowns and Dayton picked up its first conference win, beating Davidson. Cook had 193 yards passing for the Flyers (2-2, 1-0 Pioneer League). Tucker Yinger ran for two touchdowns and had a receiving touchdown. Richie Warfield ran for two scores. The Flyers trailed 14-0 early in the second quarter when Warfield scored his first touchdown from six yards out. The Wildcats (3-1, 0-1) went four-and-out after that and Dayton took over at the Davidson 37, setting up Warfield’s second scoring run eight plays later, making it 14-14 with 6:22 left in the half. Dayton scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half, starting with Yinger’s runs of 18- and 8-yards to give the Flyers a 28-14 lead. Tyler Phelps threw for 177 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats.
North Carolina 38, Pittsburgh 35
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.
Antonio Williams ran for two scores while Nathan Elliott threw for two more to help North Carolina beat Pittsburgh in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener. Williams finished with a career-best 114 yards rushing for the Tar Heels (1-2, 1-0 ACC), who put together a solid all-around showing after road losses at California and East Carolina. Elliott also had a big day, shaking off two games worth of accuracy issues to throw for a career-best 313 yards while completing 71 percent of his passes. Kenny Pickett threw for two scores and ran for another for Pitt (2-2, 1-1), which fell to 0-6 against its Coastal Division foe since joining the ACC in 2013.
Bryant 49, Robert Morris 46
SMITHFIELD, R.I.
Price Wilson threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns as Bryant opened Northeast Conference play by holding off Robert Morris. The Bryant defense slowed the Colonels with three fumble recoveries. Tomas Wright sealed the win for Bryant (3-1, 1-0) as he forced a fumble when he sacked Jimmy Walker and pounced on the ball at RMU’s 13 in the closing minutes. Bryant led throughout until Walker crashed in from the 2 early in the fourth and then sneaked across from the 1 for a 46-42 lead with 6:46 remaining. Bryant responded quickly when Isaac McCray skirted left end to score from the 26 to retake the lead with 3:09 left. Alijah Jackson rushed for 109 yards and two scores to lead the Colonels (1-3, 0-1).
Wooster 24, DePauw 21
WOOSTER
First-year Mateo Renteria electrified Wooster with 388 yards passing in his first collegiate start, and the Fighting Scots’ defense protected a three-point lead with an interception and fourth-down stop down the stretch. While it took Wooster (2-2, 1-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) scored 21 points in the third quarter to take a 21-7 lead into halftime. Cam Pollard intercepted Chase Andries in the final minute of the first half. Renteria found Nick Strausbaugh in space, and the junior scored on a 73-yard catch-and-run. Strausbaugh’s touchdown marked the 20th receiving score of his career. He’s the fifth Scot to reach the milestone. Sophomore Mark Herron recorded nine tackles. It’s the Chaney graduate’s third straight game with seven or more tackles.
Westminster 21, Bethany 3
NEW WILMINGTON, PA.
Sophomore John Cybak put Westminster (3-1, 3-0 PAC) up 6-0 after a pair of field goals (38, 37) in the second quarter. Freshman Bryce Thomas set up Westminster’s first touchdown of the game with a 72-yard interception return to the Titans’ two-yard line. Junior Isiah Canton ran it in on the next play. Junior Connor Cox found Joey Joy with a pass for a successful two-point conversion to put the Titans ahead 14-3 with 2:08 left. Senior Bryson Paulinellie led all receivers with five catches for 83 yards. Junior Bryce Hill ran it for a team-high 45 yards.
Washington & Jefferson 62, Grove City 10
WASHINGTON, PA.
Junior running back Wesley Schools helped pace Grove City by rushing for 117 yards on 26 carries. Sophomore wide receiver Cameron Drake pulled in four passes for 102 yards. Sophomore Cody Gustafson had three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. Grove City freshman quarterback Josh Ehst, who made his first collegiate start and appearance in the game, threw for 170 yards on 13 of 28 passing. Former Lakeview quarterback Zach Rogers went 3 of 8 for 17 yards for Grove City. W&J quarterback Jacob Adams completed 15 of 22 passes for 276 yards and six touchdowns. Andrew Wolf caught six balls for 196 yards and four touchdowns.
