Tiger Woods shares lead at East Lake

ATLANTA

Not even one bad hole could keep Tiger Woods from a share of the 36-hole lead for the first time in more than five years.

Woods was on the verge of building a cushion Friday in the Tour Championship with three birdies in a four-hole stretch, only to make double bogey from the rough and a plugged lie in the bunker that forced him to play away from the hole at No. 16.

He finished with a two-putt birdie for a 2-under 68 to tie Justin Rose (67) going into the weekend at East Lake.

Woods last shared the 36-hole lead in the 2015 Wyndham Championship. He wound up tied for 10th.

Rory McIlroy made enough birdies to offset his mistakes and had a 68. He was two back.

Fisher shoots first 59 in European Tour history

Vilamoura, Portugal

After 46 years, the European Tour finally has its first round of 59.

English golfer Oliver Fisher was sprayed with champagne beside the 18th green after two-putting for par from 40 feet to complete a 12-under round containing an eagle and 10 birdies on a par-71 course at the Portugal Masters on Friday.

It was the first sub-60 round on the European Tour. There have officially been 10 on the U.S. PGA Tour, with one of them a 58 by Jim Furyk in 2016 at the Travelers Championship.

He ended the day in a three-way tie for the lead on 12-under 130 alongside compatriot Eddie Pepperell (66) and Lucas Herbert of Australia (67).

Fisher birdied Nos. 10-12, then No. 15, before saving par with a 20-foot putt at the 16th. He tapped in for birdie from three feet at No. 17 and held his nerve down the last, hitting his tee shot down the middle of the fairway and safely finding the green with his approach.

There have been 19 rounds of 60 on the European Tour. Eighteen players have done so, with Darren Clarke achieving it twice.

Fisher’s only tour title came in 2011 at the Czech Open.

Sergio Garcia, looking to get back into form ahead of next week’s Ryder Cup, was back on 6-under 136 after a 70.

Glover takes lead at Tour Championship

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla.

Former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover shot his second consecutive 7-under 64 on Friday to take a one-shot lead at the Web.com Tour Championship.

The 38-year-old Glover, who won the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black, needs a high finish this weekend at Atlantic Beach Country Club to secure his PGA Tour card for the upcoming season. The last of his three PGA Tour victories was in 2011.

Glover earned $17,212 in the first three Web.com Tour Finals events. The top 25 money winners in the four-tournament series earn PGA Tour cards, and the final card went for $40,625 last year.

Glover was at 14-under 128. Denny McCarthy, who has already earned enough money to secure a return to the PGA Tour, was one shot back. Tour veteran Cameron Tringale, who has earned just $2,660 after missing two of the first three cuts, was 12 under after a 67.
