Nearly 40 Boardman High School students and district staff members were happy to work up a sweat on Sept. 7, to spruce up a southside Youngstown neighborhood. The Emerging Leaders Group has been volunteering for the United Way’s annual Day of Caring for years, and the students say it’s one of their favorite volunteer experiences.

“Our emerging leaders group evolved from the high school’s YES Fest, where we encourage students to say ‘no’ to drugs, but to say ‘yes’ to volunteering of all types,” said Safarek. “The Day of Caring is becoming a tradition for our kids - in fact, for some of our seniors it’s their fourth year working to make a difference with the United Way.”

The students edged sidewalks, pruned trees, cleared out brush and picked up trash along Florida and Rush, just off South Avenue in Youngstown. They worked alongside Boardman staff members including secretaries, teachers, assistant principals and Superintendent Tim Saxton to get the job done.
