Audobon Society to hear Bue speak

The Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Bigfoot in Ohio and Beyond” at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the Canfield library. Is the Ivory Billed Woodpecker extinct? Ornithologists search. Does Bigfoot exist? Researchers investigate. The speaker for this event, Amy Bue, is a mother, teacher, editor, aspiring novelist and a cancer survivor with an enormous bucket list. As far as “Bigfooting” goes, she had her own sighting of something strange near Meander Reservoir in 2012. After several years on her own and with friends, in 2015, the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) invited her to join as an investigator. She works mostly locally but travels wherever the action is, including as far as the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. She’s involved with next month’s Bigfoot Day in Beaver Creek State Park.

Cardinal Mooney to host seventh- and eighth-grade parent night

Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. Local dancers invited to North Bloomfield event

On Sept. 29 the North Bloomfield Historical Society will host a Western Square Dance from 7-9:30 p.m. No dancing experience is needed. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 330-506-3370.

Newcomers club to meet on Sept. 26

The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will host their first meeting at A la Carte Restaurant in Canfield on Sept. 26. The gathering is at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is at noon. Jeanne Moore and Phyllis Scoville will be hostesses. This meeting will let them catch up on summer activities and preview the plans and schedules for the 2018-19 year. Newcomers was formed 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the area. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Libraries remain open for holiday

All PLYMC libraries will be open on Columbus Day, Oct. 8.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings

A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Concert event to benefit new center

There will be a Sacred Song Concert featuring solos and duets by Allan and Jennifer Mosher with pianist Jack Ciarniello at 6 p.m. on Sept. 30 at the Cornersburg Baptist Church, located at 3898 Tippecanoe Road in Youngstown. This event celebrates CBC’s 50th anniversary and anticipates the opening of The Eagle’s Nest Life Equiping Center. Freewill offerings will be accepted to benefit The Eagle’s Nest. Chaney alumni to celebrate 80th birthdays at luncheon

The Chaney High School Class of 1956 will meet for a luncheon on Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Davidson’s Restaurant, located on State Route 62 in Cornersburg, Meals will be ordered from the menu. Celebrate teen read week with Mindy McGinnis

Help the Canfield library celebrate Teen Read Week, which is a national event from Oct. 7-13, with award-winning, Ohio author and blogger, Mindy McGinnis on Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. McGinnis writes across multiple genres including post-apocalyptic, historical, thriller, contemporary, mystery and fantasy. “A Madness so Discreet,” McGinnis’s gothic historical set in an insane asylum, won the Edgar award for Best Teen Mystery in 2015. She also manages a blog titled, “Writer, Writer, Pants on Fire,” which features author interviews, writing advice, query critiques and help in navigating the seas of the publishing world. You can also listen to her weekly podcast that features interviews with published authors.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, at the Canfield library every Thursday at 10 a.m.

Stuffed animal sleepover

Have you ever wondered about what happens at the library when it’s closed? The Canfield librarians will share their secret world with your stuffed animal friends at the stuffed animal sleepover on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. Go to the library and enjoy a good night story with your special friend. Enjoy milk and a snack and then tuck your stuffed animal in for the night. On Oct. 12, you can pick up your stuffed animal and their photos during library hours, then let them whisper about their evening to you. Dolls and other toys are invited, but only one toy per child is allowed. This event is for children who are ages 2-6.

Lego my library

Meet at the Canfield library on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. and Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in October at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in October at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Wild about Harry Potter

Come dressed in your Hogwarts best, be sorted into your house and try the trivia challenge at this event at the Canfield library on Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. Make an awesome craft. Enjoy a snack and drawings. This event is for children of all ages.

Tales to tails

Read to your favorite therapy dogs on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. This program helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or they’ll find one for you. Therapy dogs are provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local pet therapy group. This event is for children grades K and up.

Family movie

Join the Canfield library on Oct. 6 at 2:30 p.m. for a Saturday Movie Matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7 years and younger must be with an adult.

Movie night

Join the Canfield library on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. for a movie night where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Movie will be either PG or PG 13.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Canfield library on Oct. 12 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). This event is for adults.

Mah-Jongg Mondays

Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun each Monday from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend (Mah-Jongg sets not provided). This event is for adults.

Red, White and True Festical to be Sept. 22

Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods will celebrate American craftsmanship with its seventh annual Red, White and True Festival on Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at its mill at 7060 Crory Road in Canfield. Learn local history while fundraising

Canfield History Walk: A Step Back in Time is a fundraising event for the non-profit Canfield Historical Society. The history walk will guide visitors through Canfield’s past, from early pioneer days to the early 20th century. Local volunteers will portray historical persons and events. Re-enactments include an action packed bank robbery, the fatal shooting of Canfield Sheriff Cone, the funeral of Elijah Bond and more. The guided walk around Canfield’s central green will teach young and old about local history and foster a love of community. The event will take place two Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29. There will be four tours each day, beginning at 4 p.m. with the last tour departing at 5:45 p.m., rain or shine. The Sept. 22 tours are $10 per person. The Sept. 29 tours have a special walk/dinner package available. The ticket price, including dinner at Piccadilly Parlor, is $40 per couple or $25 per individual. Learn how to turn a hardcover book into a hollowed-out secret storage container at the Canfield library on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. They will be taking used hardcover books and transforming them into hidden storage for your home or office. Off the shelves

Join this monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen “Off the Shelves” of the Canfield library’s Book Club Room. The next meetings will be Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. and Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. This event is for adults. Upcoming reads are “Pachinko” by Min Jin Lee (September) and “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood (October).

Mah-jongg for beginners

Learn to play American Mah-Jongg, a fascinating rummy-like game played with tiles throughout September at the Canfield library. The game originated in China and gained popularity in the U.S. in the 1920s. Class size is limited and registration is required. Chair yoga

Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center

The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days.
