Audobon Society to hear Bue speak
The Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Bigfoot in Ohio and Beyond” at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the Canfield library. Is the Ivory Billed Woodpecker extinct? Ornithologists search. Does Bigfoot exist? Researchers investigate. The speaker for this event, Amy Bue, is a mother, teacher, editor, aspiring novelist and a cancer survivor with an enormous bucket list. As far as “Bigfooting” goes, she had her own sighting of something strange near Meander Reservoir in 2012. After several years on her own and with friends, in 2015, the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) invited her to join as an investigator. She works mostly locally but travels wherever the action is, including as far as the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. She’s involved with next month’s Bigfoot Day in Beaver Creek State Park.
Cardinal Mooney to host seventh- and eighth-grade parent night
Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. Newcomers club to meet on Sept. 26
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will host their first meeting at A la Carte Restaurant in Canfield on Sept. 26. The gathering is at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is at noon. Jeanne Moore and Phyllis Scoville will be hostesses. This meeting will let them catch up on summer activities and preview the plans and schedules for the 2018-19 year. Newcomers was formed 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the area. Local dancers invited to North Bloomfield event

Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
Gamblers Anonymous meetings
A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Love Thy Curves tent sale to also help DAV
Love Thy Curves, a plus size consignment boutique will be having their tent sale on Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. All items under the tent will be priced at $1, $3 or $5. Part of the proceeds will go to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). The DAV will be offering hotdogs and drinks for donation. The DAV will also have a 1953 M38A1 military jeep on display. Love Thy Curves is the area’s only plus size consignment boutique. They specialize in sizes 16 and up and carry shoes, jewelry and accessories also. Myrddin Winery hosts dog rescue event
Join Legacy Dog Rescue and bring your dog for Yappy Hour time at Myrddin Winery on Sept. 29 from 2-6 p.m. For $10 you get three tastings and a glass of Sangria! This event, which takes place at the Boardman library on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., will feature fall stories and a craft for children ages 4-5. Preschoolers must attend with an adult to this 30-minute story time.

Free screenings identify men at risk for cancer
Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley will fund a local free prostate cancer screening this month. PSA blood draws will be available from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sept. 23 during the Fuel the Fight Car Show at Boardman High School, located at 7777 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman. Pre-registration is not required. Screenings are free and open to any man 40-years-old or older. Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley supports free prostate cancer screenings through its prostate cancer fund. Retiring your flag
During the month of September, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal. Valley Legacy Awards 2018 nominees announced
Nominees were recently announced for the 2018 Valley Legacy Awards. Now in its 14th year, the annual event honors civic-minded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley. The 22 nominees will be recognized and the Valley Legacy Awards presented to the winning Outstanding Seniors and Outstanding Advocates at a luncheon on Oct. 10. Those nominated by members of the community are: Outstanding Senior Award for Professional Excellence - Elder George Dial (Austintown), Stephana Liptak (Poland), Rich Morgan (Boardman) and Outstanding Senior Advocate - Laurie Antunze and Molly (Boardman). Akron Children’s Hero Patients inspire Akron Marathon runners
When the going gets tough for runners in the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron marathon, half marathon and team relay presented by FirstEnergy on Sept. 29, they can find inspiration in the faces of this year’s featured Hero Patients from Akron Children’s Hospital. For the third year, more than a dozen patients were selected to represent the hospital as part of its role as the title beneficiary of the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series. The patients, who inspire with their stories of triumph over medical challenges, will cheer runners and walkers along the course. The patients will be featured in “hero zones” along the 26.2 mile route. Heroes will be accompanied by their parents, siblings and, in some cases, classmates, medical providers and friends at their zones, as well as representatives of the zone’s sponsors. Night market to begin in June
The Mission Night Market inaugural year festivities will occur at the Huntington Place plaza, located at 1393 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on the second Friday of every month June through October, from 6-10 p.m. Thes last remaining date is Oct. 12. Proceeds to benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Vendors spots are available for $50 per 10 by 10 tent space and $100 for food trucks and the several 10 by 20 tent spaces. However, participation is by application process. MNM Committee limits the overall number and type of vendors for each event and vendors must be approved to participate.
