Audubon Society to hear Bue speak

The Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Bigfoot in Ohio and Beyond” at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the Canfield library. Is the Ivory Billed Woodpecker extinct? Ornithologists search. Does Bigfoot exist? Researchers investigate. The speaker for this event, Amy Bue, is a mother, teacher, editor, aspiring novelist and a cancer survivor with an enormous bucket list. As far as “Bigfooting” goes, she had her own sighting of something strange near Meander Reservoir in 2012. After several years on her own and with friends, in 2015, the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) invited her to join as an investigator. She works mostly locally but travels wherever the action is, including as far as the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. She’s involved with next month’s Bigfoot Day in Beaver Creek State Park.

Cardinal Mooney to host seventh- and eighth-grade parent night

Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. Local dancers invited to North Bloomfield event

Newcomers club to meet on Sept. 26

The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will host their first meeting at A la Carte Restaurant in Canfield on Sept. 26. The gathering is at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is at noon. Jeanne Moore and Phyllis Scoville will be hostesses. This meeting will let them catch up on summer activities and preview the plans and schedules for the 2018-19 year. Newcomers was formed 25 years ago to offer those with lifestyle changes an opportunity to meet new people and become acquainted with events and places in the area. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings

A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Austintown Alumni raffle winners announced

The winners of the Austintown Alumni Association raffle are Victoria Burton, first prize - $500; Patti Griffin, second prize - basket of gift cards from local merchants and Patti Gondol, third prize - gift cards for Rachel’s Restaurant and The Manor. The drawing took place on Sept. 14 at the Hall of Fame Game at Austintown Fitch. Proceeds from this raffle support the association’s scholarship and mini grant funds. Celebrate teen read week with Mindy McGinnis

Help the Austintown library celebrate Teen Read Week, which is a national event from Oct. 7-13, with award-winning, Ohio author and blogger, Mindy McGinnis on Oct. 9 at 9 a.m. McGinnis writes across multiple genres including post-apocalyptic, historical, thriller, contemporary, mystery and fantasy. “A Madness so Discreet,” McGinnis’s gothic historical set in an insane asylum, won the Edgar award for Best Teen Mystery in 2015. She also manages a blog titled, “Writer, Writer, Pants on Fire,” which features author interviews, writing advice, query critiques and help in navigating the seas of the publishing world. You can also listen to her weekly podcast that features interviews with published authors.

Active shooter response presentation

Keith Smith, Austintown Police Department and Active Shooter Response Instructor, will discuss the topic of active shooters and the best practices to take in the event of an active killer situation at this event at the Austintown library on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. This presentation deals with real life situations and sensitive topics. Hopewell Theater announces auditions for “Snoopy the Musical”

Audition dates for “Snoopy the Musical” will take place on Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. and Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Hopewell Theater, located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Performance dates will be Dec. 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16. Rehearsals start on Oct. 22. This place is a series of short scenes with music based on the Charles Schulz’s comic strip “Peanuts.” Parts available include Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Peppermint Patty, Sally and Woodstock (non-speaking part). You must be 16 or older to audition for this show. No parts have been pre-cast. For auditions, performers will be expected to perform a short vocal selection of their choosing (you must provide music for the accompanist) and to read from the show. This show is fairly active so performers must be able to step on and off blocks approximately 18 inches high. Pat Vidis is the director. Saxon club hosts dinner event

The Youngstown Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road, will host its next Pork-Kraut Dinner event on Sept. 23 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price of $9.50 for adults and $5 for children includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and takeouts will be available.

The business plan: preparing for tomorrow and beyond

Now that you have looked into your idea, it’s time to learn how to get others to invest in your dream. This workshop, which takes place on Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library, introduces the business plan as the strong foundation for securing funding, operating and growing your business. They will discuss the resources that will help you research and look at Gale’s Small Business Builder, a tool to assist you in making your business plan. Immaculate Heart of Mary hosts BINGO event

Every second Wednesday of the month, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church will host a special BINGO event. Doors will open at 9 a.m. and games will begin at 10:05 a.m. A master set costs $10 and no sales will be available after 10 a.m. Eight games will be played with a 60/40 split with the last game being a winner take all coverall. Autism interaction workshop to take place on Oct. 16

In conjunction with the state affiliates of the Autism Society of America, the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley is partnering with the Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning County Mental Health Boards, Potential Development Program and the Rich Center for Autism to host an Autism interaction training workshop on Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Four Mile Run Christian Church, located at 701 North Four Mile Run Road in Youngstown. Continental breakfast and lunch is provided. Scholarships are available via the county Mental Health and Recovery Boards. Workshops have been approved for Advanced CIT Training. Retiring your flag

During the month of September, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal. Valley Legacy Awards 2018 nominees announced

Nominees were recently announced for the 2018 Valley Legacy Awards. Now in its 14th year, the annual event honors civic-minded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley. The 22 nominees will be recognized and the Valley Legacy Awards presented to the winning Outstanding Seniors and Outstanding Advocates at a luncheon on Oct. 10. Those nominated by members of the community are: Outstanding Senior Award for Professional Excellence - Elder George Dial (Austintown), Stephana Liptak (Poland), Rich Morgan (Boardman) and Outstanding Senior Advocate - Laurie Antunze and Molly (Boardman). The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season

The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Upcoming shows are: Oct. 19-28 - “Twilight Zone,” Dec. 7-15 - “Snoopy, the Musical,” Jan. 4-13 - “Sea Horse,” Feb. 15-24 - “Raisin in the Sun,” March 29-April 7 - “Godspell,” May 10-19 - “Deathtrap” and June 7-16 - “On Golden Pond.” Flex passes are on sale for six shows for $60 for adults and $42 for seniors/students.

Saxon Club hosts annual flea market

The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio.
