SPORTS DIGEST || Cuban donates $10M after workplace probe

DALLAS

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has agreed to contribute $10 million to help further the cause of women in sports and raise awareness about domestic violence after an investigation released Wednesday substantiated numerous incidents of sexual harassment and improper workplace conduct within the franchise going back more than 20 years.

Investigators hired by the outspoken billionaire said there was no evidence to show Cuban knew of the most explosive allegations involving former team president Terdema Ussery. But the report faulted Cuban for not firing two employees when there were clear signs he should have.

The report was made public some seven months after Sports Illustrated detailed years of examples of a hostile workplace for women on the business side of the team.

Anne Milgram, one of the lead investigators and former attorney general in New Jersey, said Cuban didn’t know many details of allegations because he was rarely in the club’s business office. It is housed away from the home arena and basketball operations.

But when some issues were brought to Cuban’s attention, he erred by not acting swiftly, the report said.

Jim Calhoun takes D-III head coaching job

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.

Jim Calhoun has officially been named the head coach at Division III University of Saint Joseph in Connecticut.

The Hall of Famer had already announced he would be taking the job and has been working for a year to establish a men’s basketball program at the small Catholic university, which was an all-women’s school until this school year.

Calhoun also has continued to serve in an advisory role at UConn, where he served as coach for 26 seasons and led the Huskies to three of their four national titles before retiring in 2012.

The 76-year-old will return to the sidelines with a career record of 873-380 when the Blue Jays open the season on Nov. 9 against William Paterson University.

That game will be played at Trinity College in Hartford, which has a gym that seats about 2,200 people, about 1,000 more than the gymnasium at Saint Joseph.

Ex-Phantom Prosvetov assigned to Saginaw

Former Youngstown Phantoms goalie Ivan Prosvetov was assigned to the Ontario Hockey League by the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday.

Prosvetov was selected with the 114th pick in the 2018 draft in June.

The Spirit opened their season with a 5-2 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Wednesday.

Dolphins’ FitzMagic will share nickname

DAVIE, Fla.

Miami Dolphins rookie safety Minkah Fitzpatrick wants to trademark his nickname but says he’d be happy to share it with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Both go by “FitzMagic,” and the Bucs’ QB has been making headlines while leading his team to a 2-0 start as a replacement for the suspended Jameis Winston.

That’s not the reason Minkah Fitzpatrick recently filed for a federal trademark of the nickname, he said Wednesday.

“I would have done it a while back, but I couldn’t because I was in college,” the Dolphins’ first-round draft pick said. He said he seeks the trademark because he wants to use the name to sell a line of apparel.

Minkah Fitzpatrick said he has been called FitzMagic since junior high school in New Jersey. He said he has had no communication with Ryan Fitzpatrick about the shared nickname.

“I really don’t think he’s too worried about it,” Minkah said. “If he wants the name, he can take it. He’s a great player. If he wants it, he can contact me and my people, and he can have it.”

His application for a trademark drew criticism on social media.

“They want me to earn my nickname; that’s what I’m going to do,” Minkah Fitzpatrick said.
