YMCA Health Fair is set for Wednesday

YOUNGSTOWN

The YMCA of Youngstown’s Health Fair is from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Central YMCA , 17 N. Champion St., in downtown Youngstown.

The annual event is free. With more than 40 vendors participating and health screenings available during the event, community members can solicit advice and gain insight into improving their lives, said program director Meri Fetkovich.

Fair vendors provide services like vaccines, screenings, and information to the community. Participants need only sign in to be eligible for raffles, Fetkovich said.

Suicide-prevention tips

COLUMBUS

National Suicide Prevention Week recently ended, but medical officials said people should constantly be aware of warning signs. One suicide warning sign is when people isolate themselves and find difficulty connecting with others.

By encouraging people to have conversations about mental health, lives can be saved, said Ken Yeager, Ph.D., director of Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Stress Trauma and Resilience Program.

Yeager offers advice on how to talk with someone you suspect may be suffering from depression.

Say something. Open channels of communications and talk about how you can help.

Keep the individual’s best interests at heart. Say something like “would you be willing to talk to someone else and get a professional opinion? I’m not asking you to give up anything, I just want you to feel better.”

Offer your time to participate in someone’s daily life. Show willingness to be part of their lives and long-term care.
