A field of 144 golfers participated in the 20th Annual M & M Golf Classic which was hosted by Mike & Mark Sahli on Sept. 2. The tournament was held on the South Course at the Mill Creek Park Golf Course. The scramble event was won by Todd Franko, Todd Bury, Mick Engle and Brandon Pluchinsky with a score of 57. The proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Akron Children’s Hospital and “M&M Classic Scholarships” for BHS.
Bunnell joins YSU baseball as assistant

Eric Bunnell, a Northeast Ohio native, has joined the Youngstown State baseball program as an assistant coach, Head Coach Dan Bertolini announced on Monday.
Bunnell, a Conneaut native, served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Chicago in 2018 and has 14 years of collegiate coaching experience.
With Bunnell on the staff last season, UChicago tied the school record for wins in a season by posting a 26-13 record while the offense scored eight runs per game. Outfielder Maximiliano Larsen was named as an All-Region selection by D3baseball.com after ranking second in the nation with 23 doubles. Larsen also broke the school record for career doubles with 60.
In addition to working with the Maroons’ hitters, Bunnell also worked with the defense and base runners.
Bunnell got his start in coaching at his alma mater, Mount Union, during the 2005-08 seasons. During that span, the Purple Raiders tied the school record for wins twice and made two conference tournament appearances.
While playing for Mount Union, Bunnell earned All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors in 2003 and was named to the All-Tournament team in 2002 after helping lead the Purple Raiders to the conference championship game.
Trenkle joins YSU men’s basketball staff

Brady Trenkle, a successful junior college head coach for the last eight years, has been named an assistant coach on the Youngstown State men’s basketball staff, Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun announced on Monday.
Trenkle, who owns an eight-year junior college coaching record of 149-102, comes to YSU after spending the last four years as the Head Men’s Basketball coach at Garden City Community College. During his time at GCCC, Trenkle amassed a four-year record of 77-50. Last season, Trenkle led the Broncobusters to an overall record of 21-12 and a trip to the Region VI semifinals.
In his first year as head coach his team went 22-9 and finished tied for third in the Jayhawk West Conference. That was the best record at GCCC since the 2008-09 season and the best finish in the Jayhawk West Conference since the 2004-05 season. His team also finished at the top in several statistical categories in Region VI (first in field-goal percentage defense, first in defensive rebounding, first in turnover margin, second in rebounding margin, third in scoring defense, and fourth in scoring margin).
YSU men’s cross country ranks 12th in latest poll

After another impressive showing at the Auto Owners/Playmakers Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State last Friday, the Youngstown State men’s cross country team climbed two spots to No. 12 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Region Poll.
The Penguins, who were No. 14 last week, finished fifth out of 21 teams at the Spartan invitational and had two runners finish in the top 10 for the second straight week.
Senior Ryan Sullivan placed fourth with a time of 25:09.8 and was the top attached Division I finisher in the race, and senior Alan Burns posted a time of 25:22.8 and finshed eighth ahead of runners from Michigan State and Michigan.
YSU is idle this week and returns to action Sept. 28, at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind.
