Niles Friendly Squares will host “Fun Night” from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Niles SCOPE Center. Square dance lessons will be offered for beginners. No dance experience required. Liberty Fall Fest will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 29 at the L.Y.R.I.C. (old high school gym) on Churchill Road. Admission is free. Buddy Walk of the Valley 2018 will take place Sunday at Eastwood Field in Niles. Gates open at 11 a.m., and the walk begins at 1. Canfield Historical Society will host “A Step Back in Time,” a fundraising event, around Canfield’s central green. The history walk will guide visitors through Canfield’s past, from early pioneer days to the early 20th Century. Local volunteers will portray historical persons and events. Re-enactments include an action packed bank robbery, the fatal shooting of Canfield Sheriff Cone, the funeral of Elijah Bond and more. The event will take place Saturday and Sept. 29. Four tours each day beginning at 4 p.m. with the last tour departing at 5:45, rain or shine. Saturday’s tours are $10 per person; Sept. 29 tours have a special walk/ dinner package available. Legacy Dog Rescue and Friends of Fido are announcing the 2018 Youngstown Bark and Booze at 3 p.m. Saturday. Registration will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. at O’Donold’s (the first stop), 122 W. Struthers Historical Society will host Alexander Frankfort Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Frankfort House, 50 Terrace St. There will be infantry demonstrations, American Indian displays, a rope walk and museum tours. Reenactments will be featured by the Shriver Grays, 27th VA Co. G Reeneactors; Sons of Confederate veterans; Boy Scout Troop 101; and a special appearance by Steffon Wydell Jones, a local researcher and one of the founders of the 5th United States Colored Infantry Regiment re-enactment group.
Suzie’s Dogs & Drafts, 34 N. Phelps St., Youngstown, in cooperation with the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, is sponsoring a “Donate a Hot Dog” campaign to help provide food to the area’s homeless population. Throughout the year, Suzie’s customers can donate a hot dog for the hungry and write a note of support. Donations will be matched dog-for-dog by the restaurant. On the second Wednesday of every month, employees will provide a meal and bring all the notes for the overnight residents and meal visitors at the Rescue Mission. The goal is food for the body and encouragement for the spirit. The project is inspired by the shooting death last November of Colin Brown. Brown worked in the restaurant industry, managing newly opened restaurants and helping get them off the ground. He was a volunteer with the Common Wealth Kitchen Incubator in Youngstown, was known for his pay it forward attitude and always helping those in need.
Veterans Outreach and Boardman Park will celebrate the lives of fallen soldiers Sept. 21, 22 and 23 by hosting the Ohio Flags of Honor traveling memorial tribute in the park. A Bike Run will take place the opening day with a bike for every soldier. Each one of those riders would have placed an event dog tag on the handle bars. The arrival time is between 3 and 4 p.m. Friday. The first 299 bikes assigned to those soldiers have previously signed up. There is a special parking lot for the bikes for the three-day event. Additional bikes could be referred to as the “Bike Brigade for Ohio’s 299 Fallen.” On Friday, setup will begin around 8 a.m. and the ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. There will be around 850 flags set up near the amphitheater. Saturday will be open to the public for flag viewing from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a church service on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon. The flags will remain standing with the closing ceremonies starting at 2 p.m. with the releasing of 299 helium-filled messaged balloons. For information, call John Ely at 330-398-2904.
TRIPS AND TOURS
