No. 1 Alabama 62, Mississippi 7

OXFORD, MISS.

Tua Tagovailoa threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns, Jerry Jeudy caught two scoring passes and No. 1 Alabama buried Mississippi. The Tide’s offense had 516 total yards and was so effective that Tagovailoa’s evening was over by midway through the second quarter. The left-handed sophomore completed 11 of 15 passes. The Tide then turned to Jalen Hurts, who completed 7 of 10 passes for 85 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Jordan Ta’amu completed just 7 of 22 passes for 133 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Rebels.

No. 2 Clemson 38, Georgia Southern 7

CLEMSON, S.C.

A week of worry at Clemson over an approaching hurricane ended with the Tigers victory over Georgia Southern. Travis Etienne ran for 162 yards and two touchdowns for the No. 2 Tigers (3-0) and Trevor Lawrence threw for 194 yards, including a 57-yard score to fellow freshman Justyn Ross in their first meeting with Georgia Southern (2-1) of the Sun Belt Conference. Clemson’s defense shut down Georgia Southern’s option offense. Clemson outgained Georgia Southern 595-140.

No. 3 Georgia 49, Middle Tennessee 7

ATHENS, GA.

Jake Fromm threw three touchdown passes and Elijah Holyfield ran for 100 yards, each playing only the first half, as No. 3 Georgia overwhelmed Middle Tennessee. Georgia led 42-7 at halftime. Freshman Justin Fields ran 15 yards for a touchdown last in the first half and threw a touchdowns pass in relief of Fromm. Jeremiah Holloman caught three passes for 90 yards, including an 11-yard scoring pass from Fromm in the first quarter. Mecole Hardman had a touchdown catch and a 70-yard punt return touchdown, and Tyler Simmons had a 56-yard touchdown run. Patrick Smith caught nine catches for 77 yards and a score for the Blue Raiders. Fromm completed 10 of 12 passes for 128 yards.

No. 5 Oklahoma 37, Iowa State 27

AMES, IOWA

Kyler Murray threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns and No. 5 Oklahoma held off Iowa State in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Marquise Brown had 191 yards receiving and a TD for the Sooners (3-0, 1-0 Big 12). The Sooners killed nearly eight minutes on a drive that ended with a 42-yard field goal from Austin Siebert with 2:51 left, and Parnell Motley’s interception with 1:11 to go sealed. Zeb Noland threw for a career-high 360 yards and a pair of long touchdown passes to Hakeem Butler for the Cyclones (0-2, 0-1).

BYU 24, No. 6 Wisconsin 21

MADISON, WIS.

Squally Canada ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns and BYU handed mistake-prone Wisconsin its first nonconference home loss since 2003, giving the No. 6 Badgers fits with its motion offense in a victory. The Cougars (2-1) tossed in a trick play, too, when receiver Aleva Hifo found open tight end Moroni Laulu-Pututau for a 31-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Wisconsin (2-1) had one last chance to avoid an upset with a drive that started with 3:55 left at the 8. But normally reliable senior kicker Rafael Gaglianone’s 42-yard field goal attempt to tie with 41 seconds left went wide left.

No. 12 LSU 22, No. 7 Auburn 21

AUBURN, ALA.

Cole Tracy kicked a 42-yard field goal on the final play to give No. 12 LSU a victory over No. 7 Auburn. Joe Burrow led LSU (3-0) down the field in the final minutes with clutch plays and two pass interference calls against Auburn (2-1). Burrow hit Derrick Dillon over the outstretched arms of Auburn linebacker Deshaun Davis for a 71-yard touchdown strike with 8:18 left. Burrow’s two-point attempt failed, leaving Auburn up 21-19. Burrow completed 15 of 34 passes for 249 yards, with Justin Jefferson gaining 97 yards on five catches. Jarrett Stidham was 16 of 28 for 198 yards and a touchdown but threw two interceptions. JaTarvious Whitlow ran for 104 yards on 22 carries.

No. 8 Notre Dame 22, Vanderbilt 17

SOUTH BEND, IND.

Jalen Elliott knocked the ball loose from Vanderbilt receiver Kalija Lipscomb with 1:07 remaining to give Notre Dame a fourth-down stop and No. 8 Notre Dame held on for a victory over the Commodores. Kyle Shurmur threw for 326 yards and one touchdown for Vanderbilt (2-1), rallying his team back from a 16-3 halftime deficit. Tony Jones Jr. finished with 118 yards on 17 carries for Notre Dame (3-0). He also caught two passes from quarterback Brandon Wimbush for 56 yards. Wimbush threw for 122 yards and added 84 yards on the ground, including a 13-yard scramble for a touchdown as Notre Dame took an early 10-0 lead late in the first quarter.

No. 9 Stanford 30, UC Davis 10

STANFORD, CALIF.

K.J. Costello overcame a rough start to throw two touchdown passes to JJ Arcega-Whiteside and No. 9 Stanford beat FCS-level UC Davis. Costello threw interceptions on two of the first three drives of the game for the Cardinal (3-0) before settling in a bit against the overmatched Aggies (2-1). Costello found Arcega-Whiteside in the end zone on passes of 9 and 8 yards. Arcega-Whiteside used his superior size to box out defenders and make the plays that gave him five TD catches on the season. Costello finished 17 for 30 for 214 yards with two TDs and two interceptions.

No. 11 Penn St. 63, Kent State 10

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

Trace McSorley accounted for five touchdowns and broke Penn State’s record for most rushing scores by a quarterback as the No. 11 Nittany Lions routed Kent State. The Heisman Trophy hopeful completed 11 of 22 passes for 229 yards and ran for three touchdowns for the Nittany Lions (3-0). DeAndre Thompkins caught four passes for 101 yards for Penn State. Miles Sanders rushed for 86 yards on 14 carries while McSorley scored on runs of one, two and 13 yards. Woody Barrett completed 20 of 38 passes with 176 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Mike Carrigan for the Golden Flashes (1-2).

No. 16 Mississippi State 56, Lousiana-Lafayette 10

STARKVILLE, MISS.

Nick Fitzgerald accounted for 350 yards of offense and six touchdowns to lead No. 16 Mississippi State to a victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. Fitzgerald ran for 107 yards and four touchdowns. Fitzgerald also completed 14 of 21 passes 243 yards and two touchdowns. Aeris Williams added 101 yards and a touchdown on the ground for Mississippi State (3-0). The Bulldogs totaled 607 yards of offense with 331 yards on the ground. Louisiana’s Andrew Nunez was 21 of 29 for 224 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

No. 24 Oklahoma St. 44, No. 17 Boise St. 21

STILLWATER, OKLA.

Taylor Cornelius ran for two touchdowns and passed for another to help No. 24 Oklahoma State beat No. 17 Boise State. Justice Hill ran for 123 yards and a touchdown, and Tylan Wallace had five catches for 105 yards for the Cowboys (3-0). Boise State’s Brett Rypien passed for 380 yards and three touchdowns. A blocked punt by Oklahoma State’s Amen Ogbongbemiga led to a 1-yard touchdown run by Cornelius that gave the Cowboys a 14-7 lead.

No. 19 Michigan 45, SMU 20

ANN ARBOR, MICH.

Shea Patterson threw three touchdown passes to Donovan Peoples-Jones, helping No. 19 Michigan pull away to beat SMU. Patterson was 14 of 18 for 237 yards with three TDs threw an interception. Michigan’s Chris Evans ran for 85 yards on 18 carries. Hicks started and was 7 of 16 for 113 yards with a TD and an interception.

No. 20 Oregon 35, San Jose State 22

EUGENE, ORE.

Justin Herbert threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns and No. 20 Oregon beat San Jose State. Freshman Cyrus Habibi-Likio scored on both of his carries and Johnny Johnson III caught a pair of touchdown passes for Oregon. Quarterback Josh Love completed 15 of 31 passes for 238 yards and a score. Herbert completed 16 of 34 passes but threw two interceptions. He has thrown 12 touchdown passes so far this season.

No. 21 Miami 49, Toledo 24

TOLEDO

Malik Rosier threw for two touchdowns and ran for three more, and No. 21 Miami outlasted upset-minded Toledo. Rosier threw for 205 yards and ran for 80, and Jeff Thomas had five catches for 105 yards and a TD. Mitchell Guadagni threw for two TDs for the Rockets. Rosier scored on runs of 5 and 2 yards in the first half and also threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Thomas.

Texas 37, No. 22 USC 14

AUSTIN, TEXAS

Sam Ehlinger passed for two touchdowns and Texas beat No. 22 Southern California. Texas trailed 14-3 in the first quarter before shutting down freshman quarterback J.T. Daniels and scoring 34 unanswered points. Ehlinger threw touchdown strikes of 47 yards to Lil’Jordan Humphrey and 27 yards to Joshua Moore. Daniels passed for 322 yards, but the Trojans (1-2) were held to minus-5 yards rushing.
