Terlesky golf outing moved up to today

POLAND

The 3rd annual Christine Terlesky Lake Club Girls High School Golf Invitational scheduled for Monday has been moved to today due to a rainy forecast.

Fourteen girls high school teams will tee-off at 1:30 p.m. at the Lake Club.

Division I competitors are Boardman, Canfield, Austintown Fitch, Canton GlenOak, Massillon Jackson, Poland and Howland. Division II teams are Columbiana, Champion, Cardinal Mooney, Ursuline, Beaver Local, Lakeview and Struthers.

The invitational is in honor of Christine Terlesky, a former Boardman High School teacher and coach who has been battling ALS for five years.

Alvarez wins decision for middleweight title

LAS VEGAS

Canelo Alvarez won the middleweight title by the narrowest of margins Saturday night, taking a majority decision over Gennady Golovkin to hand the longtime champion his first loss as a pro.

A year after the two fought to a draw, the second fight was almost as close. There were no knockdowns, but the action was spirited throughout as the two battled to the final bell before a frenzied crowd at the T-Mobile Arena.

Two judges favored Alvarez 115-113, while a third had it 114-114. The AP scored it 114-114.

The two fighters switched roles, with Triple G trying to counter Alvarez and the Mexican fighter coming forward much of the fight. Both landed well to the head and Golovkin controlled some rounds with his jab though neither were ever in any trouble of going down.

The fight was a rematch of a draw last September that left neither fighter satisfied.

In a match that lasted 2:50 and saw 47 ties and 19 lead changes, YSU concluded its non-conference schedule with a 6-7 record.

Hughes, a Western Resereve High School graduate, finished with 25 kills, the most by a YSU player since Missy Hundelt in 2011, and 16 digs.

Father of Penguins coach Sullivan dies

PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan is taking a leave of absence to be with his family following the death of his father, George.

The Penguins said George Sullivan, 81, passed away on Saturday in Scituate, Mass.

Assistant coach Jacques Martin will run the day-to-day operations of the coaching staff while Sullivan is away.

“We’ll handle the load until he gets back,” assistant coach Mark Recchi said. “It’s a very tough time for him. We’ll make sure things run the way he would run.”

George Sullivan visited his son occasionally after Mike Sullivan took over as Penguins coach in December, 2015 and spent copious amounts of time with the club during Pittsburgh’s run to consecutive Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017.
