YSU men’s cross country places fifth at MSU

East Lansing, Mich.

Seniors Ryan Sullivan and Alan Burns each posted top-10 finishes for the second straight week to lead the Youngstown State men’s cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Spartan Invitational on Friday.

Sullivan, a Howland graduate, placed fourth with a time of 25:09.8 and was the top attached Division I finisher in the race. Burns, a Boardman graduate, posted a time of 25:22.8 and finshed eighth ahead of runners from Michigan State and Michigan.

For the men, Boardman grauate Chris Butler posted a time of 27:07.5, Girard graduate Derek Basinger ran a 27:14.4 and Austintown Fitch graduate C.J. Schumacher recorded a time of 27:17.1.

On the women’s side, Poland graduate Maggie Sebest was 44th with a time of 23:24.3. Canfield graduate Raquel Markulen had a time of 24:53.7, South Range graduate Xena Maali had a time of 25:11.0 and Howland graduate Morgan Buckley made her season debut with a time of 25:41.7.

Trumbull County HOF banquet set for Oct. 21

The 16th annual Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet is set for Oct. 21 at Divieste Banquet Center in Warren.

A buffett dinner will be served at 2 p.m. following a social hour at 1 p.m. There will be a cash bar.

Inductees are: Bill Beasom (Howland wrestling), Bill Burke (Howland football), Carl Diggs (Warren Harding football), Jeff Hundley (Howland baseball), Michelle Kriebel (Howland track), John Krok (Niles football), Andy Saxson (Girard girls basketball coach), Stephen Telego (Warren JFK football), Bill Trilett (Girard football), Cheryle Weaver (Champion softball coach), Bobby Hughes (Braceville boxer) and Emil “Butch” Perunko (Warren baseball).

YSU volleyball team loses match at Akron

AKRON

Akron had four players reach double figures in kills and hit .273 as a team to beat the Youngstown State volleyball team in four sets on Friday at James A. Rhodes Arena.

The set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-14.

Margaux Thompson led the Penguins with 14 kills and just three errors in 44 attempts for a .250 attack percentage. Brooklen Pe’a and Aleah Hughes both had nine kills, and Sarah Varcolla posted eight kills on a .263 clip. Thompson added 11 digs for a double-double, and Hughes had a team-high 20 digs.

Ashley Richardson paced Akron with 14 kills on just 21 attempts, and did not have an error.

YSU will play Toledo at 12:30 p.m. today.

Torres takes early lead at Evian Championship

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France

Tour rookie Maria Torres shot a 2-under 69 Friday to take a two-stroke clubhouse lead in the second round of the Evian Championship.

With players still on the course, the 23-year-old Puerto Rican finished at 8-under 134 overall. Major winners Georgia Hall (68) and So Yeon Ryu (69) were among four players at 6 under.

Top-ranked Sung Hyun Park (71) looked sure to miss the cut at 6 over.

Starting early in the rain as co-leader, Torres made bogeys on her first two holes before settling in with three birdies in the next five.

Carlota Ciganda, who also shot a 65 on Thursday, birdied her first hole on Friday to get to 7 under overall but still was on the course.
