Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled
The next meeting of the Monday Night Writers will be Sept. 17 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Learn local history while fundraising
Canfield History Walk: A Step Back in Time is a fundraising event for the non-profit Canfield Historical Society. The history walk will guide visitors through Canfield’s past, from early pioneer days to the early 20th century. Local volunteers will portray historical persons and events. Re-enactments include an action packed bank robbery, the fatal shooting of Canfield Sheriff Cone, the funeral of Elijah Bond and more. The guided walk around Canfield’s central green will teach young and old about local history and foster a love of community. The event will take place two Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29. There will be four tours each day, beginning at 4 p.m. with the last tour departing at 5:45 p.m., rain or shine. The Sept. 22 tours are $10 per person. The Sept. 29 tours have a special walk/dinner package available. The ticket price, including dinner at Piccadilly Parlor, is $40 per couple or $25 per individual. Ladies Night Out event
A Ladies Night Out event will take place on Sept. 20 at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event starts at 6:30 p.m. Join them for an evening with local floral designers, Marie Borocz, Mark Green, Anna Howells and Jenny Wehr. Red, White and True Festical to be Sept. 22
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods will celebrate American craftsmanship with its seventh annual Red, White and True Festival on Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at its mill at 7060 Crory Road in Canfield. Citizen science – collaboration in nature
Join the Volunteer Naturalists to learn about how you can help support and collect scientific information related to nature, such as invasive species. This program will take place on Sept. 17 from 6:30-8:30 p.m at the Mahoning County Extension office. Program speaker Adam Zorn, Huston – Brumbaugh Nature Center, will show participants how to use a program called iNaturalist, which allows fellow naturalists to discuss their findings and observations. Lentini speaks on experiences in Korean War
Thomas Lentini, veteran of the Korean War, will speak to the World War II Heritage Group when it meets Sept.17 at Ala Carte Catering at 6:15 p.m. The speech will be preceded by a buffet dinner, with reservations available by calling David Frank at 330-757-0515 by Sept. 16.
Coffee with the master gardeners – herbal harvest
This harvesting program will start at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 17 with refreshments and will continue with an educational program from 10 a.m. until noon. The program speaker, Pam Baytos, Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteers, will show participants how to spice up their kitchen through proper harvesting of herbs. Farmers National Bank ranked at the top
“Bank Director” magazine recently named top performing banks in their latest issue. Farmers National Bank, headquartered in Canfield and with offices throughout northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania, was named the 30th top performing bank in America and the number-one top performing bank in all of Ohio. The grades apply to publicly-traded banks with assets between $1 billion and $5 billion. In its annual bank scorecard report, “Bank Director” rated the country’s banks on a broad range of performance measures, with particular focus on profitability, capital security and asset quality.
Crafters Who Care to make car fresheners
The Crafters Who Care group of Canfield Presbyterian Church will meet at 6 p.m. in the church fellowship hall on Sept. 18 to make natural car fresheners with essential oils for the church’s Benefit Car Show, which will take place on Sept. 29. No special skills are necessary and all supplies will be provided so anyone is invited to come. Crafters Who Care is a group that gathers monthly with a focus on fun and fellowship while making various craft projects for charitable causes. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution
The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept. 17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m. The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. This event is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Local skate park to be location of music festival
The Skatepark Music Festival will take place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Wedgewood Ramps in Youngstown. The cost is $5 at the door and the event will feature such bands as Alteras, Red Nose Panic, Rees Man Dolo & Droege, Wanderer, 13 Lucky, Evidence of Ruin, Whiskey Pilot, Service Monkeys and Gho$tlee. Food will be by Suzie’s and Mission Taco. The event is hosted and produced by Paul Goon.
Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center
The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.
