Community trunk sale takes place on Sept. 15

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus #3930 are sponsoring a community trunk sale on Sept. 15 in the church parking lot, located at 4490 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. Vendor set up is from 7:30-9 a.m. Hours of the sale are from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Spots are still available for participation at $10 per car. No registration is necessary.

Immaculate Heart of Mary hosts BINGO event

Every second Wednesday of the month, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church will host a special BINGO event. Doors will open at 9 a.m. and games will begin at 10:05 a.m. A master set costs $10 and no sales will be available after 10 a.m. Eight games will be played with a 60/40 split with the last game being a winner take all coverall. This event will take place at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4490 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, beginning on Sept. 12. For further information, call 330-793-9988.

Retiring your flag

During the month of September, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal. Pre-kindergarten story time

This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten every Wednesday in September at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library.

Movie night

Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie at the Austintown library on Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Grab and go craft

Make a grab and go craft during regular hours at the Austintown library during the month of September. This event is for children of all ages.

Valley Legacy Awards 2018 nominees announced

Nominees were recently announced for the 2018 Valley Legacy Awards. Now in its 14th year, the annual event honors civic-minded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley. The 22 nominees will be recognized and the Valley Legacy Awards presented to the winning Outstanding Seniors and Outstanding Advocates at a luncheon on Oct. 10. Those nominated by members of the community are: Outstanding Senior Award for Professional Excellence - Elder George Dial (Austintown), Stephana Liptak (Poland), Rich Morgan (Boardman) and Outstanding Senior Advocate - Laurie Antunze and Molly (Boardman). The Valley Legacy Awards luncheon will take place on Oct. 10 at The Maronite Center, located at 1555 S Meridian Road in Youngstown. Tickets are $30 and the public is invited. Chaney alumni to celebrate 80th birthdays at luncheon

The Chaney High School Class of 1956 will meet for a luncheon on Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Davidson’s Restaurant, located on State Route 62 in Cornersburg, Meals will be ordered from the menu. Lentini speaks on experiences in Korean War

Thomas Lentini, a veteran of the Korean War, will speak to the World War II Heritage Group when it meets on Sept.17 at Ala Carte Catering at 6:15 p.m. The speech will be preceded by a buffet dinner, with reservations available by calling David Frank at 330-757-0515 by Sept. 16.

GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. Gotta Move story time

This event is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution

The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept. 17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m. The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. Austintown library to close temporarily for repairs in September

The Austintown library, located at 600 S. Raccoon Road, will be temporarily closed for two weeks for repairs to and repaving of the parking lot. The closing is expected to begin on Sept. 10. The Library’s Board of Trustees approved the parking lot repairs at a special meeting on Aug. 20, in addition to the exterior painting of the Austintown and Springfield locations. Both libraries will remain open during painting. Ongoing information can be found on the library’s website, libraryvisit.org, or Facebook page, LibraryMahoningCounty. Additional work being planned for the Austintown library includes roof repairs and exterior repairs. During the two-week closure, the library’s building and grounds department will take advantage of the opportunity to do cleaning and repair work inside the building, as well. The Austintown library will have security as needed during this period and book drops will not be available. Austintown library customers can use any of the other libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) system during the closing. Nearby libraries include the Michael Kusalaba Library, located at 2815 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, and the Canfield library, located at 43 W. Main St. in Canfield.

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m.

Autism interaction workshop to take place on Oct. 16

In conjunction with the state affiliates of the Autism Society of America, the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley is partnering with the Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning County Mental Health Boards, Potential Development Program and the Rich Center for Autism to host an Autism interaction training workshop on Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Four Mile Run Christian Church, located at 701 North Four Mile Run Road in Youngstown. Continental breakfast and lunch is provided. Scholarships are available via the county Mental Health and Recovery Boards. Workshops have been approved for Advanced CIT Training. Local skate park to be location of music festival

The Skatepark Music Festival will take place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Wedgewood Ramps in Youngstown. The cost is $5 at the door and the event will feature such bands as Alteras, Red Nose Panic, Rees Man Dolo & Droege, Wanderer, 13 Lucky, Evidence of Ruin, Whiskey Pilot, Service Monkeys and Gho$tlee. Food will be by Suzie’s and Mission Taco. The event is hosted and produced by Paul Goon.

The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season

The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Upcoming shows are: Oct. 19-28 - “Twilight Zone,” Dec. 7-15 - “Snoopy, the Musical,” Jan. 4-13 - “Sea Horse,” Feb. 15-24 - “Raisin in the Sun,” March 29-April 7 - “Godspell,” May 10-19 - “Deathtrap” and June 7-16 - “On Golden Pond.” Flex passes are on sale for six shows for $60 for adults and $42 for seniors/students.

Saxon Club hosts annual flea market

The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like.
