Greek, Serbian food festival

HERMITAGE, PA.

The Orthodox Food Festival will take place this weekend at St. George Serbian grounds, 65 S. Keel Ridge Road, featuring live music, refreshments, Greek and Serbian food, a silent auction and more. Admission is free.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Acclaimed pianist in recital at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

John Mortensen, a leader in the international revival of classical improvisation, will give a free piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Bliss Recital Hall, lower level of Bliss Hall, on the Youngstown State University campus.

Mortensen will perform improvisations in 18th century and contemporary styles.

Appearing frequently as a concert artist and masterclass teacher at colleges and universities in America and Europe, Mortensen is noted for his ability to improvise entire concerts in historical styles, including complex compositions such as baroque fugues.

His students learn a natural and coordinated approach to piano technique which prevents injury and allows for unprecedented freedom and facility at the keyboard.

In 2017, he was selected as a Fulbright specialist to serve as an international artistic ambassador on behalf of the American people. He toured Europe for three months this year, and now serves as professor of piano at Cedarville University.

CMT show will honor only women

NASHVILLE, Tenn.

CMT is changing its Artists of the Year show to honor only women, including Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Kelsea Ballerini, Maren Morris, Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman of Little Big Town and Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum.

The move comes as female artists in the genre have been outspoken about the lack of opportunities for them. Women have been shut out of nominations for major country awards, such as CMA’s entertainer of the year category for two years in a row, and men overwhelmingly dominate country radio charts.

CMT senior vice president of music and talent Leslie Fram said she hopes dedicating the entire show to women in country music — past, present and future— will spark a “much-needed change in the industry.” The show airs on CMT at 8 p.m. on Oct. 17.
