1297: Scottish rebels led by William Wallace and Andrew Moray defeat English troops in the Battle of Stirling Bridge during the First War of Scottish Independence.

1936: Boulder Dam (now Hoover Dam) begins operation as President Franklin D. Roosevelt presses a key in Washington to signal the startup of the dam’s first hydroelectric generator.

1954: The Miss America pageant makes its network TV debut on ABC; Miss California, Lee Meriwether, is crowned the winner.

1993: Trumbull County lawyers and judges praise Domestic Relations Court Judge Thomas Norton as a gentleman and a family man after he announces his resignation from the bench.

Two contractors plead innocent in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to attempted grand larceny and conspiracy to obstruct justice regarding bills for remodeling work at the county engineer’s offices, which county commissioners turned over to the prosecutor to investigate.

Mahoning County commissioners go to Columbus to seek state funds that will allow the county to take over the Youngstown City Jail, which has been closed since Aug. 31.

1978: Jack Warner, the fun-loving motion-picture tycoon who lived part of his early life in Youngstown and got his start in show business here, dies in Hollywood at age 86. Warner and three of his brothers built a movie empire that bore their name and produced the first talking picture, “The Jazz Singer” in 1927.

Showman John Kenley, who severed his long ties with the Packard Music Hall and took his summer stock theater to Akron, says he was happier in Warren, but is bound to Akron by a contract for at least another year.

Danny Shoemaker, 20, of New Middletown and Nancy Patton, 20, of Poland are killed when their car left Route 551 in Little Beaver Township near New Castle, Pa., and struck a tree.

1968: Ohio Atty. Gen. William Saxbe visits Youngstown to open a campaign headquarters, renew old friendships and say a few words on behalf of the man he thinks is best qualified to be a U.S. senator from Ohio: himself.
