King, Hill win in Sharon season finale

It took until the season finale at Sharon Speedway for five-time Big-Block Modified track champion, Rex King, to garner his first win of 2018. King made the winning move on lap seven and held off a furious challenge by Garrett Krummert for the 25-lap Hovis Auto & Truck Supply feature win. The Bristolville native won $1,500 and upped his career win total to 54, which is tops for active Big-Block Modified racers.

James Hill came out on top of a 39-car field of racers from six different states to win the inaugural “Mark Marcucci Memorial” in the richest Mod Lite race in the history of Sharon. The First State racer passed Rod Jones on lap 16 and went on to win the 20-lap feature, which was worth $1,588 after bonuses.

Marcucci, 29, died when a truck he was riding in crashed into a tree in April. That same crash killed former Youngstown State baseball player Kevin Yarabinec.

Scherr paces YSU golf in rainy tournament

HENRYVILLE, IND.

The Youngstown State men’s golf team concluded play in the Fuzzy Zoeller Intercollegiate at Champions Pointe Golf Club on Sunday. YSU finished 11th with a three-round total of 895 after battling wet, rainy conditions for most of the weekend.

Play was suspended due to weather after the first round on Saturday, but the teams were able to finish the final 36 holes on Sunday. Sophomore Kevin Scherr paced the Penguins, finishing tied for 12th with a career-best, three-round 213 (71-70-72). His mark of 213 tied for the seventh-best, 54-hole performance in school history.

C.J. Hughes finished in tie for 27th after turning in a total of 219.

Serena Williams fined $17k

NEW YORK

Serena Williams has been fined a total of $17,000 for three code violations during the U.S. Open final.

The tournament referee’s office docked Williams $10,000 for “verbal abuse” of chair umpire Carlos Ramos, $4,000 for being warned for coaching, and $3,000 for breaking her racket.

The money comes out of her prize money of $1.85 million as the runner-up. Williams lost to Naomi Osaka in Saturday’s final.

Alabama still tops AP Top 25 Poll

Alabama is No. 1 at being No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll.

The Crimson Tide made its 106th overall appearance at the top of the AP rankings, which started in 1936, passing Ohio State for the most by any school.

Alabama received a season-high 54 first-place votes from the media panel in the Top 25 released Sunday , strengthening its hold on No. 1 over No. 2 Clemson. The Tigers, who started the season with 18 first-place votes, are down to six after hanging on for 28-26 victory at Texas A&M on Saturday night.

Fitzpatrick wins European Masters

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland

Matthew Fitzpatrick sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to retain his European Masters title Sunday in a playoff against Lucas Bjerregaard.

Fitzpatrick had holed a shorter birdie putt on the same 18th green 20 minutes earlier to card a 3 under 67. That forced a playoff with Denmark’s Bjerregaard, who fired a 7 under 63.

Both finished with 17 under totals of 263 at Crans-sur-Sierre club in the sun-soaked Swiss Alps.

One dead, 37 hurt in stadium crush

ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar

French radio service RFI is reporting at least one person has died and 37 have been injured in a crush before an African Cup of Nations qualifying soccer game in Madagascar involving Sadio Mane’s Senegal team.

RFI says a stampede happened before kickoff at the Mahamasina Municipal Stadium on Sunday.

Television pictures showed packed stands at the stadium, which has a capacity of around 22,000. Reports say thousands began queuing hours before kickoff in an attempt to get a ticket to watch Mane and Senegal’s other stars. It’s unclear if the crush happened inside or outside the stadium.
