School to host Grandparents Day

In honor of Grandparents Day, B.L. Miller Elementary School has invited students’ grandparents to have lunch with their grandchild(ren) throughout the second week of September. If a grandparent is unable to attend, the school has asked for a special note to be written for the child to receive on his or her grade’s respective Grandparents Day. Dates and time are as follows: Monday will be the kindergarten class from 11:50 to 12:20; Tuesday will be first grade from 10:45 to 11:15 and third grade from 11:20 to 11:50; Wednesday will be sixth grade from 10:55 to 11:25 a.m. and fourth grade from 11:35 to 12:05 p.m. and Thursday will be second grade from 11:10 to 11:40 a.m. and fifth grade from 11:40 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.

Programs earn badge of distinction

The badges are coming in batches for Slippery Rock University. The Colleges of Distinction guide has awarded the university with a 2018-19 Field of Study badge for professional programming in education. This award comes on the heels of SRU earning a Field of Study badge for its business programs. This year marks the second straight year that both the education and business programs have been recognized by COD.

SRU helps ease strain on power grid

When air conditioners are turned up to maximum on hot summer days, so is the demand for electricity and the risk of overloading power grids. Fifteen years ago, the northeast region of the United States experienced one of the world’s most widespread power outages, affecting more than 55 million people in eight states and parts of Canada. Although Slippery Rock University was not affected by the blackout, it is prepared to ease the stain on the region’s electric grid, and possibly prevent a similar outage from happening again, which was caused by a failure to redistribute electrical loads.

Group announces new officers

Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence announced new officers, according to a press release.

Retired Boardman teacher Edie Davidson is the fund’s new president. Meg Harris, a clinical supervisor at Alta Behavioral Health, is the new vice president. Annie Sofran, senior public relations specialist at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, is the new secretary.

Lynda Beichner, who has served as a PTA officer and co-chaired the Friends of Boardman Schools 2018 Levy Committee, also joins the board this year.

The Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence funds new projects in the Boardman School District through teacher mini grants. The fund has donated more than $58,000 since its inception in 2013.
