E Michigan 20, Purdue 19

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.

Chad Ryland kicked the go-ahead field goal as time expired to lift the Eastern Michigan Eagles over the Purdue Boilermakers. Quarterback Tyler Wiegers was 20 of 28 for 312 yards and a touchdown pass that came in the second quarter from 75 yards to Mathew Sexton to put the Eagles ahead 7-3. Blake Banham finished with six receptions for 99 yards and Arthur Jackson had six receptions for 84 yards for the Eagles. The Boilermakers (0-2 Big Ten Conference) took a 19-17 lead after DJ Knox’s 45-yard touchdown run with 6:41 remaining. Knox finished with 152 yards rushing on 21 carries and Markell Jones had 109 yards rushing on 12 carries. Starting quarterback David Blough was 6 of 10 for 48 yards passing. Elijah Sindelar was 8 of 14 for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Duke 21, Northwestern 7

EVANSTON, ILL.

Daniel Jones threw for three touchdowns before leaving the game with an apparent injury, and Duke beat Northwestern. Jones passed for three TDs in the second quarter, but he got driven to the turf on a sack by Joe Gaziano at the end of the third and was replaced by Quentin Harris early in the fourth. Jones completed 16 of 22 passes for 192 yards in another big game against Northwestern. Jonathan Lloyd had 94 yards receiving, including a 52-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Davis Koppenhaver had a one-handed TD grab late in the first half. Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson was 22 of 38 for 198 yards and an interception. He again shared time with TJ Green, who went 9 for 18 for 84 yards and an interception. Jeremy Larkin ran for 121 yards and a Northwestern touchdown after going for a career-high 143 in the opener against Purdue. Flynn Nagel had 12 catches for 133 yards both career bests. But the Wildcats lost for the first time since Penn State beat them last Oct. 7.

Colorado 33, Nebraska 28

LINCOLN, NEB.

Steven Montez connected with Laviska Shenault Jr. for a 40-yard touchdown with 1:06 to play and Colorado’s defense held at the end, allowing the Buffaloes to beat Nebraska and spoil Scott Frost’s debut. Colorado got the ball for the last time with 2:23 left after Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez went out of the game because of an injury. Sophomore walk-on Andrew Bunch, who took over for Martinez, moved the Huskers to the CU 21, but JD Spielman couldn’t come down with the ball in the end zone on the game’s final play. Martinez ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 187 yards and another score. Montez was 33 of 50 for 351 yards and three touchdowns, with Shenault catching 10 balls for 177 yards. Montez passed 8 yards to MacIntyre for a touchdown that pulled the Buffs to 28-27. After missing two field goals that would have given them the lead, the Buffaloes got the ball back for the winning touchdown.

Iowa 13, Iowa State 3

IOWA CITY, IOWA

Mekhi Sargent scored on a 2-yard TD run with 4:47 left and Iowa beat Iowa State for the fourth year in a row. Miguel Recinos added a pair of field goals for the Hawkeyes (2-0). Iowa’s winning streak over the Cyclones (0-1) is the longest since the Hawkeyes took 15 straight from 1983-97. The latest matchup between these two instate rivals was mostly a slog between what could be two of the better defenses in the country. But Iowa finally put together a decent drive when it mattered most by going 83 yards in 13 plays — highlighted by a 30-yard reception by Brandon Smith to set up Sargent’s touchdown. Kyle Kempt threw for 126 yards for Iowa State before leaving with what appeared to be a leg injury, and Iowa held the Cyclones to 188 yards overall. Iowa State’s David Montgomery ran for just 44 yards on 17 carries. Nate Stanley was 16 of 28 passing for the Hawkeyes.

Maryland 45, Bowling Green 14

BOWLING GREEN

Tayon Fleet-Davis rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns, and Ty Johnson had 124 yards and another score as Maryland broke out in the second half and beat Bowling Green. With Bowling Green leading 14-10 at halftime, Maryland (2-0) ripped off 35 unanswered points in the second half to cruise to the easy win. Maryland piled up 565 yards in total offense but didn’t take the lead until there was 4:31 left in the third quarter. The Terps defense held Bowling Green to 158 total yards, including just 15 rushing and sacked quarterback Jarret Doege five times. The Terps, who upset Texas last week, took a 17-14 lead on a third-and-22 play when Jahrvis Davenport caught Kasim Hill’s pass, broke several tackles and worked his way down the right sideline for the 22-yard touchdown. They put the game away with four rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Indiana 20, Virginia 16

BLOOMINGTON, IND.

Stevie Scott bowled through Virginia’s defense, rushing 31 times for 204 yards and one touchdown in his first college start to lead the Indiana Hoosiers to a victory. Peyton Ramsey was 16 of 22 for 150 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Hoosiers. Virginia (1-1) was led by Bryce Perkins, who was 12 of 24 for 106 yards with two TDs while running 25 times for 123 yards. He became the first Cavaliers quarterback to top 100 yards rushing in back-to-back games since Hall of Famer Bill Dudley in 1941.

Minnesota 21, Fresno State 14

MINNEAPOLIS

Seth Green ran for two short touchdowns, including the game-winning 3-yard score late in the fourth quarter, and Antione Winfield Jr. sealed the game with an interception off a trick play in the end zone as Minnesota held off Fresno State. One first-and-goal from the 4 with 1:18 to play, Bulldogs quarterback Marcus McMaryion handed off to fullback Josh Hokit, who floated a pass toward Jared Rice in the corner of the end zone. But Winfield reached back with both hands, snagged the ball and somehow got his foot down in bounds for the touchback. Gophers true freshman Zack Annexstad completed 16 of 26 passes for 175 yards. The Gophers caught an extra break on the play when the officials hit the Bulldogs with a 15-yard sideline interference penalty, and Green scored the winning touchdown five players later, and even added a two-point conversion toss to Ko Kieft for some breathing room. McMaryion threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns, including a 45-yard score to KeeSean Johnson with 8:20 to play to give Fresno State a 14-13 lead. McMaryion also threw a 1-yard touchdown to Rice late in the third. Emmit Carpenter hit two 50-yard field goals for the second time in his Minnesota career. Green scored his third and fourth touchdowns of the season after getting two similar short scores last week in their opener against New Mexico State.
