New leagues or existing leagues seeking new settings are invited to request times. Reserve has 18 holes and a full-service bar and restaurant.

YSU volleyball falls to Virginia in sweep

Charlottesville, Va.

The Youngstown State volleyball team couldn’t keep up with a hot-hitting Virginia squad on Friday morning as the Penguins dropped the opening match of the Jefferson Cup in straight sets. The scores were 25-10, 25-21, 25-13.

The Cavaliers posted 20 more kills than the Penguins and outhit YSU .367-.040. Youngstown State was forced into a negative attack percentage in two of the three sets.

Western Reserve graduate Aleah Hughes led YSU with six kills, and Margaux Thompson registered 12 digs. Hughes and Thompson both had a pair of blocks as well.

Sarah Billiard had 13 kills, and Chino Anukwuem had eight kills in 11 attempts to pace Virginia.

Youngstown State will play two more matches in Charlottesville, Va., on today. The Penguins will take on George Mason at 11 a.m., and they’ll follow that up with a contest against UNC Wilmington at 3:30 p.m.

YSU soccer shutotut by Purdue Fort Wayne

The Youngstown State women’s soccer team lost to Purdue Fort Wayne, 1-0, on Friday evening from the Hefner Soccer Complex.

The Mastodons improve 3-4-1 to while the Penguins fall to 1-4-2.

Purdue Fort Wayne got on the board early when Kayla Wisniewski scored in the 29th minute to give the Mastodons a 1-0 lead.

During the second half, the Penguins were unable to put one in the back of the on four shots. For the game, Purdue Fort Wayne outshot YSU 14-7.

The Penguins are back in action this Sunday when they host Robert Morris at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.

Shapiro will ‘shed no tears’ for Wahoo logo

TORONTO

Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro spent more than two decades working for the Cleveland Indians. He says he’ll “shed no tears” when the Chief Wahoo logo disappears from Indians uniforms.

The Indians are wearing grey road uniforms without the controversial logo on the left sleeve during their current four game series at Toronto.

In January, the Indians announced plans to remove the logo from their uniforms next year. The move came after decades of protests and complaints that the grinning, red-faced caricature used in one version or another since 1947 is racist.

During his time with the Indians, Shapiro played a lead role in establishing a block “C” as Cleveland’s logo. It replaced the cartoonish image of a big-toothed American Indian with a scarlet face and a single feather in his headdress.

Seahawks still haven’t decided on Thomas

RENTON, Wash

The Seattle Seahawks have not yet decided whether safety Earl Thomas will be added to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s season opener in Denver.

Coach Pete Carroll said a decision would come Saturday. He wanted to see how Thomas came out of the final day of practice.

Thomas held out from Seattle’s offseason program and training camp, only reporting to the team Wednesday. Thomas was seeking a contract extension or a trade.

The Seahawks could also have a developing situation at cornerback after expected starter Dontae Johnson suffered a groin injury in practice and was listed as questionable.

If Johnson can’t play, Seattle may start rookie Tre Flowers, a converted safety.
