MVREIA meeting to take place on Sept. 10

The Mahoning Valley Real Estate Investors Association will meet on Sept. 10 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center, located at 375 Canfield Poland Road, for its monthly meeting. This month will feature Al Cowgill. Cowgill is an author, a national speaker and a private lending consultant who has been featured in three newspaper articles about purchasing real estate through private lenders. He has appeared in three national infomercials and has been published in two books titled “Walking with the Wise in Real Estate” and “Walking with the Wise Entrepreneur” alongside many well-known figures. The public is welcome. Non-members are invited to attend two monthly meetings free. Join them on the second Monday of every month. Hall of fame dinner to be Sept. 15

The 2018 Poland All Sports Booster Hall of Fame Dinner will take place on Sept. 15 from 6-11 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) at Holy Family Parish Center in Poland. The event will feature a full buffet dinner with beer or wine, live entertainment featuring Cleveland Dance Band “The Players Club” and prizes. The cost is $60 per ticket (all inclusive). Free lecture on longevity to take place

Youngstown Spine and Disc, Inc is hosting a free lecture, open to the public, on “The Secrets of Longevity” on Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. The event is located on the second floor lobby in the Tiffany Medical Center, located at 7067 Tiffany Boulevard, Suite 280, in Poland. The guest speaker will be Dr. Ronald Ruscitti, DC. He will be sharing information about diet, lifestyle, exercise, “Blue Zones,” antioxidants and NAD/stem cell research. Ruscitti has been a practicing doctor and nutritionist for more than 30 years after receiving a bachelor’s degree in human biology and a doctor of chiropractic degree. Gilchrist to be honored

Stephanie Gilchrist, Executive Director of Inspiring Minds Youngstown, will be honored as “Woman of the Year” at a special event during National Business Women’s Week Æ, sponsored by the Youngstown Business and Professional Women. The event will take place on Oct. 16 at The Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Dr. Anne McMahon Scholarship Award, which is awarded annually to a deserving female student furthering her education at Youngstown State University. Retiring your flag

During the month of September, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal. Valley Legacy Awards 2018 nominees announced

Nominees were recently announced for the 2018 Valley Legacy Awards. Now in its 14th year, the annual event honors civic-minded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley. The 22 nominees will be recognized and the Valley Legacy Awards presented to the winning Outstanding Seniors and Outstanding Advocates at a luncheon on Oct. 10. Those nominated by members of the community are: Outstanding Senior Award for Professional Excellence - Elder George Dial (Austintown), Stephana Liptak (Poland), Rich Morgan (Boardman) and Outstanding Senior Advocate - Laurie Antunze and Molly (Boardman). Women’s league to have Sept. 10 picnic

The GFWC/OFWC Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will have their annual welcome back picnic on Sept. 10 at the Elton Beard Log Cabin in Boardman Park at 6:30 p.m. and general meeting at 7 p.m. Women who are interested in membership are welcome to attend as guests as they are in need of community support for new membership. Contact any member or the membership chairwoman to make a reservation. Members are to bring school supplies which will be donated to Summit Academy in Youngstown. Plans will be discussed for the upcoming quarter auction on Oct. 13 at St. Nick’s social hall. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution

The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept. 17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m. The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. The Niles Friendly Squares will celebrate their eighth anniversary at their monthly square dance on Sept. 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 per person donation at the door. Gene Hammond will be the caller. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Each lesson builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The Tuesday evening sessions will run weekly through April 16, 2019 at the Niles SCOPE Center. There is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Poland library on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join the Poland library every Thursday in September at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Back to school bash

Dance, move, laugh and play games at the Poland library on Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. to celebrate the beginning of a new school year. This event is for children in grades K-4.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Poland library on Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Trim a tree for September

Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree during regular hours throughout September. This event is for children of all ages.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International on Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Snack-n-sign

This event is for all fifth-eighth graders. Go to the Poland library on Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. to learn sign language and about Deaf culture through fun, interactive games and activities. A snack will be provided. This event is for tweens and teens.

Guess the banned books

Banned Book Week will be celebrated at the Poland library Sept. 23-29 during regular library hours. They have shredded some of the most challenged YA books and you need to guess the titles. Someone will win a prize. Don’t worry, the books shredded were ones that were worn out and replaced. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Color your world

Join the Poland library on Sept. 20 from 7-8 p.m. for a relaxing evening of coloring for teens and adults. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own.

DIY gourmet caramel apples

If you have ever want to make those delicious apples they sell at local festivals and gourmet shops, dripping with caramel, chocolate and decadent toppings, this event at the Poland library on Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. is your chance. Make an apple for yourself and sample some pre-made goodies. This event is for tweens, teens and adults. Stamping fun

Blood drive

Beginning conversational French

If you want to know how to order from a menu or ask for help in French or want to learn about French culture and food, join Ron Saffell for this series of six programs, every Wednesday starting on Sept. 19 and ending on Oct. 24 at 1 p.m., and learn French using games and fun activities. This event is for adults only. Reservations are needed for each date you will attend.

Yoga class

The Friends of PLYMC are sponsoring a yoga class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room at 5 p.m. Pay as you attend. The cost is $10 per session. Class is from 5-6 p.m. For more information, call 330-740-6086. This event is for adults.

Local skate park to be location of music festival

The Skatepark Music Festival will take place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Wedgewood Ramps in Youngstown. The cost is $5 at the door and the event will feature such bands as Alteras, Red Nose Panic, Rees Man Dolo & Droege, Wanderer, 13 Lucky, Evidence of Ruin, Whiskey Pilot, Service Monkeys and Gho$tlee. Food will be by Suzie’s and Mission Taco. The event is hosted and produced by Paul Goon.

Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 11

The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the basic square dance program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 16. There is a nominal fee of $6 per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Historical society plans fundraising bus trip

The Poland Historical Society is planning a fundraiser bus trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 19. The trip includes a visit at the Heinz Memorial Chapel, the National Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh, lunch at the Church Brew Works, tour of the Strip District and Downtown and a two hour cruise on the Explorer riverboat. The cost of the trip is $105 per person includes the bus transportation, admission fees and lunch. The bus will depart from Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland, promptly at 8:30 a.m. and attendees are asked to arrive at the church by 8:15 a.m. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. and should arrive back in Poland at approximately 6:30 p.m. Questions should be directed to Larry Bartos, 330-757-4223. The deadline to sign-up for the trip is Aug. 11. There will be no refunds after Aug. 11. Make checks payable to the “Poland Historical Society” and mail to The Poland Historical Society, P.O. Also indicate your choice for lunch: chicken breast, chef’s salad, tilapia or pasta primavera. Forms for the trip will be available at the society’s tent near Poland Village Town Hall during “Celebrate Poland.” You will also be asked to sign an “Emergency Contact Information” form which includes information of a contact person should an emergency arise.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days.
