Chaney alumni to celebrate 80th birthdays at luncheon

The Chaney High School Class of 1956 will meet for a luncheon on Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Davidson’s Restaurant, located on State Route 62 in Cornersburg, Meals will be ordered from the menu. MVREIA meeting to take place Sept. 10

The Mahoning Valley Real Estate Investors Association will meet on Sept. 10 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center, located at 375 Canfield Poland Road, for its monthly meeting. This month will feature Al Cowgill. Cowgill is an author, a national speaker and a private lending consultant who has been featured in three newspaper articles about purchasing real estate through private lenders. He has appeared in three national infomercials and has been published in two books titled “Walking with the Wise in Real Estate” and “Walking with the Wise Entrepreneur” alongside many well-known figures. The public is welcome. Non-members are invited to attend two monthly meetings free. Join them on the second Monday of every month. The public is also invited to the Private Lending Dinner Workshop Mahoning Valley and Akron Joint, sponsored by MVREIA and ACREIA, on Sept. 14 from 6-8 p.m. The workshop will take place at Polinori’s Palm Garden Inn, located at 1441 S Liberty Ave. in Alliance. They will begin promptly at 6 p.m. This event is private and registration is required. The cost for REIA members and non members is $29.95. They will also host a full day workshop on business management from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the Hampton Inn, located at 800 Mondial Parkway in Streetsboro. Gathering Place event to take place Sept. 10

There will be a Gathering Place event on Sept. 10 at 11 a.m. at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, Personnel from the Canfield Fire Department will have an ambulance and hazmat vehicle and equipment on display. They will answer any questions. Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands and blood pressures will be taken promptly at 11 a.m. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens. It takes place on the second Monday of the month, every month. Different games and activities are also offered each month. Women’s league to have Sept. 10 picnic

The GFWC/OFWC Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will have their annual welcome back picnic on Sept. 10 at the Elton Beard Log Cabin in Boardman Park at 6:30 p.m. and general meeting at 7 p.m. Women who are interested in membership are welcome to attend as guests as they are in need of community support for new membership. Contact any member or the membership chairwoman to make a reservation. Members are to bring school supplies which will be donated to Summit Academy in Youngstown. Plans will be discussed for the upcoming quarter auction on Oct. 13 at St. Nick’s social hall. Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution

The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept. 17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m. The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. September square dance and weekly lessons begin

The Niles Friendly Squares will celebrate their eighth anniversary at their monthly square dance on Sept. 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 per person donation at the door. Gene Hammond will be the caller. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Each lesson builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The Tuesday evening sessions will run weekly through April 16, 2019 at the Niles SCOPE Center. There is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. Net neutrality

Join journalism and communication professor Dr. Shelley Blundell (YSU), graduate assistant in the American Studies program Elizabeth Lehman (YSU) and Edward Koltonski, PLYMC’s business librarian on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library for a look at developing a better understanding of the complex topic of net neutrality. Discover the history of the debate, how it has been applied in your daily life and what could happen next because of the recent changes made by the FCC. Playtime at your library

Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Canfield library on Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thurday in September at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Fall fest

Celebrate the fall season with a story, traditional games, fall craft and snacks at the Canfield library on Sept. 22 at 2:30 p.m. This event is for children of all ages.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday at 10 and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m. and Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Tales to tails

Come and read to your favorite therapy dogs at the Canfield library on Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. This helps to develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. This event is for children in grades kindergarten and up. Therapy dogs will be provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group. This event is for school-age children.

Make a small fairy garden

Use your imagination to create your own small fairy garden at the Canfield library on Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. Container, soil and decorations will be provided as well as some snacks. This event is for tweens who are ages 9-12.

Coloring for grown-ups

Join the Canfield library on Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for adults and teens only.

Re-purposed book craft

Learn how to turn a hardcover book into a hollowed-out secret storage container at the Canfield library on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. They will be taking used hardcover books and transforming them into hidden storage for your home or office. Supplies are provided, and space is limited so register online at www.libraryvisit.org or over the phone at 330-744-8636. This event is for adults only.

Sit and stitch

Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library on Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (Unfinished objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event is for adults.

Family movie

Join the Canfield library on Sept. 8 at 2:30 p.m. for a Saturday Movie Matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7-years and younger must be with an adult.

Cord cutting 101

If you have ever thought about cutting the cord on your cable or satellite or want to have more freedom of choice and save money, visit the Canfield library on Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. Learn about cord-cutting including the basics of streaming devices and services. This event is for adults.

Facebook for beginners

Let the Canfield library teach you how to connect with family and friends on Facebook on Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. They will show you how to start posting, sharing and liking posts right away. Don’t have an account? They will help you set up your own account. Feel free to bring your laptop, tablet or smart phone to follow along and make signing up or using Facebook easy. This event is for adults.

Off the shelves

Join this monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen “Off the Shelves” of the Canfield library’s Book Club Room. The next meetings will be Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. and Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. This event is for adults. Upcoming reads are “Pachinko” by Min Jin Lee (September) and “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood (October).

Stephen King Constant Readers club

Join the Canfield library on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Stephen King’s riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers. This month they will dive into an informal discussion of “Song of Susannah,” the sixth book of the Dark Tower Series, followed by a preview of new and exciting upcoming titles. This event is for adults.

Free blood pressure check

There will be a free blood pressure check by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association at the Canfield library on Sept. 19 from 1-2 p.m.

If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop in during Canfield library hours to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults

Mah-jongg for beginners

Learn to play American Mah-Jongg, a fascinating rummy-like game played with tiles throughout September at the Canfield library. The game originated in China and gained popularity in the U.S. in the 1920s. Class size is limited and registration is required. Mah-jongg Mondays

Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun on Sept. 10, 17 and 24 at the Canfield library from 1-3 p.m. Bring your own Mah-jongg set or share with a friend; Mah-jongg sets are not provided. This event is for adults.

Canfield Friends Committee to meet

There will be a Friends of PLYMC - Canfield Committee Meeting on Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Canfield library.

Chair yoga

This event is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC. Pay as you attend at $10 per class for chair yoga at the Canfield library on Sept. 14, 21 and 28 at 10 a.m. Dress comfortably. Local skate park to be location of music festival

The Skatepark Music Festival will take place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Wedgewood Ramps in Youngstown. The cost is $5 at the door and the event will feature such bands as Alteras, Red Nose Panic, Rees Man Dolo & Droege, Wanderer, 13 Lucky, Evidence of Ruin, Whiskey Pilot, Service Monkeys and Gho$tlee. Food will be by Suzie’s and Mission Taco. The event is hosted and produced by Paul Goon.

Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 11

The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the basic square dance program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 16. There is a nominal fee of $6 per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center

The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days.
