The Canfield High School cheerleading squad performed at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 29.
The fair hosted cheerleading demonstrations for 17 schools including Canfield, Austintown, Poland and Struthers.
“They were flawless today, we could not have been happier,” said Ashley Gibbs, the cheerleading Head Coach at Canfield.
Gibbs said that the team worked for more than 112 hours during the summer to prepare for the upcoming season.
“That prepares us for all of our season games as well as performances,” Gibbs said.
The team conditions throughout the summer, according to Gibbs, who said that they attend camps and work together to perfect cheers and routines.
She said that during August it kicks into full gear and the team practices Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.
As a result of this hard work, the team performed flawlessly during the fair according to Gibbs.
She said that the performance differs from a half time show because the team performed as a whole. They also performed stunts and other jumps they usually would not do during a typical performance.
The team is split into three groups, varsity, junior varsity and freshmen, with 45 cheerleaders total.
“It’s good to get the girls to learn time management and be prepared for practices to learn to work together with one another,” Gibbs said.
During the school year the team will perform at football games, pep rallies and a community tailgate.
“Our whole theme this year was ‘commit, then conquer,’ and that can only happen if we are working as a team and we are performing as one unit,” Gibbs said.
