MVREIA meeting to take place on Sept. 10

The Mahoning Valley Real Estate Investors Association will meet on Sept. 10 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center, located at 375 Canfield Poland Road, for its monthly meeting. This month will feature Al Cowgill. Cowgill is an author, a national speaker and a private lending consultant who has been featured in three newspaper articles about purchasing real estate through private lenders. He has appeared in three national infomercials and has been published in two books titled “Walking with the Wise in Real Estate” and “Walking with the Wise Entrepreneur” alongside many well-known figures. The public is welcome. Non-members are invited to attend two monthly meetings free. Join them on the second Monday of every month. The public is also invited to the Private Lending Dinner Workshop Mahoning Valley and Akron Joint, sponsored by MVREIA and ACREIA, on Sept. 14 from 6-8 p.m. The workshop will take place at Polinori’s Palm Garden Inn, located at 1441 S Liberty Ave. in Alliance. Marching band presents its take on “Saturday Night Live”

The Boardman Spartan marching band and the Boardman Band and Orchestra Parents, Inc. will host Boardman Band Night ’18 on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in Spartan Stadium. Participating high school bands include McDonald, Springfield, West Branch, Lowellville, Austintown, Canfield, Howland and the Boardman Spartan Marching Band. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Senior citizens are admitted free to all Boardman band events. Chaney alumni to celebrate 80th birthdays at luncheon

The Chaney High School Class of 1956 will meet for a luncheon on Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Davidson’s Restaurant, located on State Route 62 in Cornersburg, Meals will be ordered from the menu. Retiring your flag

During the month of September, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal. Valley Legacy Awards 2018 nominees announced

Nominees were recently announced for the 2018 Valley Legacy Awards. Now in its 14th year, the annual event honors civic-minded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley. The 22 nominees will be recognized and the Valley Legacy Awards presented to the winning Outstanding Seniors and Outstanding Advocates at a luncheon on Oct. 10. Those nominated by members of the community are: Outstanding Senior Award for Professional Excellence - Elder George Dial (Austintown), Stephana Liptak (Poland), Rich Morgan (Boardman) and Outstanding Senior Advocate - Laurie Antunze and Molly (Boardman). Women’s league to have Sept. 10 picnic

The GFWC/OFWC Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will have their annual welcome back picnic on Sept. 10 at the Elton Beard Log Cabin in Boardman Park at 6:30 p.m. and general meeting at 7 p.m. Women who are interested in membership are welcome to attend as guests as they are in need of community support for new membership. Contact any member or the membership chairwoman to make a reservation. Members are to bring school supplies which will be donated to Summit Academy in Youngstown. Plans will be discussed for the upcoming quarter auction on Oct. 13 at St. Nick’s social hall. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution

The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept. 17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m. The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. Boardman Historical Society hosts urban author and historian on Sept. 8

Local urban author and historian Sean T. Posey will be the guest speaker on Sept. 8 for the Boardman Historical Society at 10 a.m. at Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman. The program is part of a new series of BHS public offerings. The presentations are open to the public. Admission is free. Reservations are suggested. The Niles Friendly Squares will celebrate their eighth anniversary at their monthly square dance on Sept. 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Akron Children’s Hero Patients inspire Akron Marathon runners

When the going gets tough for runners in the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron marathon, half marathon and team relay presented by FirstEnergy on Sept. 29, they can find inspiration in the faces of this year’s featured Hero Patients from Akron Children’s Hospital. For the third year, more than a dozen patients were selected to represent the hospital as part of its role as the title beneficiary of the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series. The patients, who inspire with their stories of triumph over medical challenges, will cheer runners and walkers along the course. The patients will be featured in “hero zones” along the 26.2 mile route. Heroes will be accompanied by their parents, siblings and, in some cases, classmates, medical providers and friends at their zones, as well as representatives of the zone’s sponsors. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Boardman library on Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m.

Join the Boardman library on Sept. 12 and 26 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Stories, tunnels and more at Boardman library

On Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library, there will be stories, a tunnel activity and a coal miner’s hat craft for ages 4-8. Preschoolers must attend with an adult to this one-hour program. Adults are welcome to come and share your family stories about coal mining and learn about this fascinating time in history.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Apprentice’s Inn

Join the Boardman library’s beginners Dungeons and Dragons club on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. Go on dangerous quests with daring fights and hopefully you roll a D20 to save the day. Refreshments and snacks are provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Chocolate lovers delight

Learn all about the cocoa plant, different kinds of chocolate, how it is processed and how to use it in recipes at the Boardman library on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. This program includes handouts, different kinds of chocolate and chocolate baked goods to sample. I Read YA book club

This event at the Boardman library on Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. is for adult fans of Young Adult Literature from ages 18 and older. Talk about why you like YA. Read and discuss. This month they will be discussing “Love and Luck” by Jenna Evans Welch.

Reader’s Choice book club

The group will discuss “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd” by Agatha Christie on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published. They will preview October’s book, “Killers of the Flower Moon” by David Grann. This event is for adults.

Game night for adults

Play the hand you’re dealt of cards (rummy), dice (farkle) and scrabble at the Boardman library on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. Bring a friend or two and join in on the fourth Thursday of the month for snacks and bragging rights in this one-hour program for adults.

Friends of PLYMC Puzzle Swap

Swap six of your once done jigsaw puzzles with others during this event at the Boardman library on Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. This event is offered on the second Wednesday of each month and is for adults.

Local skate park to be location of music festival

The Skatepark Music Festival will take place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Wedgewood Ramps in Youngstown. The cost is $5 at the door and the event will feature such bands as Alteras, Red Nose Panic, Rees Man Dolo & Droege, Wanderer, 13 Lucky, Evidence of Ruin, Whiskey Pilot, Service Monkeys and Gho$tlee. Food will be by Suzie’s and Mission Taco. The event is hosted and produced by Paul Goon.

The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the basic square dance program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 16. There is a nominal fee of $6 per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Night market to begin in June

The Mission Night Market inaugural year festivities will occur at the Huntington Place plaza, located at 1393 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on the second Friday of every month June through October, from 6-10 p.m. These dates are Sept. 14 and Oct. 12. Proceeds to benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Vendors spots are available for $50 per 10 by 10 tent space and $100 for food trucks and the several 10 by 20 tent spaces. However, participation is by application process. MNM Committee limits the overall number and type of vendors for each event and vendors must be approved to participate.
