Shane Davis has been named the pitching coach for the Youngstown State baseball program, Head Coach Dan Bertolini announced on Wednesday.
Davis and Bertolini were teammates at Poland in 2002.
After playing at Eastern Michigan, Davis joined the Eagles as an assistant before moving on to coach at Cleveland State and Western Illinois.
Prior to joining the Western Illinois staff, Davis spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Cleveland State. He served as an associate scout for the Texas Rangers after Cleveland State dropped its baseball program in 2011.
Delaney Saxton named PAC Player of the Week
GREENVILLE, Pa.
Westminster College senior outside hitter Delaney Saxton was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Week.
Saxton, a Brookfield graduate, led the Titans in kills (42), kills per set (3.82), points (46.5) and hitting percentage (.396) while totaling eight blocks during Westminster’s 3-0 run at last weekend’s Bearcat Challenge, hosted by Saint Vincent. She posted 21 kills and a .375 hitting percentage in the Titans’ 3-2 win over John Carroll on Friday. Saxton earned a spot on the all-tournament team for her efforts.
YSU men’s basketball announces Wine Taste

The Youngstown State men’s basketball team’s 5th annual Wine Taste will be held on Oct. 2 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at The Lake Club in Poland.
The event will feature: unlimited pours, tables of wines paired with appetizers, meat and cheese table, party favors and silent and live auctions. Cost is $65 per person and $550 for a preferred table of 10.

Apple Festival Nationals to end Speedway’s year

Sharon Speedway will conclude the 89th anniversary season this weekend with the running of the annual “Apple Festival Nationals” on Friday and Saturday night. The Big-Block Modifieds, RUSH Sprint Cars, Mod Lites, Sportsman Dwarf Cars, and Junior Sprints will run a complete show on Friday night. The “410” Sprint Cars will run their complete show on Saturday night, while the Penn-Ohio Pro Stock Championship Series, RUSH Sportsman Modified Touring Series, and Econo Mods will have their shows split over the two days with their features on Saturday night. Warm-ups for selected divisions will get underway at 6 p.m. followed immediately by racing both nights.
Grandstand admission for those 14 and over is $13 on Friday and $18 on Saturday or $28 for a two-day pass. Pit passes are $35 each night or $65 for a two-day pass. There are no entry or registration fees for Sharon, only the typical Penn-Ohio and RUSH Mod Tour entry fees for those two divisions.
Children under 13, parking, and camping is free. Those camping must register when they arrive and saving of spots will not be permitted. Sharon has a no carry-in of outside food and drinks or coolers. The backstretch grandstands will not be available for general admission on Friday night — only for pit pass holders.
Longtime NHL forward ‘Ab’ McDonald, 82, dies

Alvin Brian “Ab” McDonald, who played 14 NHL seasons and scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for the Chicago Blackhawks in 1961, has died. He was 82.
McDonald died Tuesday night, according to Blackhawks. The forward played 762 regular-season and 84 NHL playoff games.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native won the Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1958 and 1959 and then again with Chicago. He finished with 182 goals and 248 assists for 430 points during his NHL career with Montreal, Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Pittsburgh and St. Louis.
