Harding’s Adams commits to Rutgers
Warren Harding running back Kay’Ron Adams committed to Rutgers. He made the announcement on Twitter on Tuesday night.
Adams ran 1,355 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns last season.
Rutgers was the only Big Ten school to offer him a scholarship. Others schools offering Adams included Kent State, Cincinnati and Toledo.
Fitch-Shaker Heights football tickets on sale
Austintown
Pre-sale tickets for the Austintown Fitch football game against Shaker Heights on Saturday will be sold on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. in the South Circle Ticket Booth.
Tickets also will be available at Aardvark Sportswear, 5329 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. Aardvark will close Saturday at noon. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
Mancini reappointed to Athletic Commission
COLUMBUS
Governor John R. Kasich announced Raymond “Boom Boom” Mancini of Youngstown and John T. Patton, III of Spencer (Medina County) have been reappointed to the Ohio Athletic Commission for terms beginning Tuesday and ending September 2, 2021.
Woods, Mickleson return to Ryder Cup
WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.
Tiger Woods is returning to the Ryder Cup as a player for the first time in six years. Phil Mickelson will set a Ryder Cup record by playing for the 12th straight time.
They join Bryson DeChambeau, the hottest player in golf, as three of the American wild-card selections.
U.S. captain Jim Furyk had an easy time with three of his four picks. DeChambeau, Mickelson and Woods were the next three in the U.S. standings behind the eight players who earned automatic spots after the PGA Championship.
DeChambeau has won the last two FedEx Cup playoff events, rising to No. 7 in the world.
Still to come for Furyk is his final captain’s pick, to be announced Monday after the BMW Championship.
The matches are Sept. 28-30 outside Paris.
Cleveland State to host college volleyball event
CLEVELAND
The Cleveland State University Classic is set for this weekend at CSU’s Woodling Gymnasium.
The tournament begins Friday.
Bowling Green will meet Illinois at 9:30 a.m., followed by a noon match between CSU and UC Irvine 12:00 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., UC Irvine and Bowling Green will play, followed by a 7 p.m. match between Cleveland State and Illinois.
The tournament continues Saturday with two more matches.
Illinois and UC Irvine will meet at 11 a.m., followed by a 1:30 p.m. match between CSU and Bowling Green.
Tickets can be purchased online at bit.ly/CSUTix for a $5 group rate or at the door upon arrival for $10.
Ryan Howard officially retires from majors
PHILADELPHIA
Ryan Howard has officially retired nearly two years after he last played in the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies.
The 2006 NL MVP spent 13 seasons with the Phillies and helped them win five division titles and the 2008 World Series. He hit 382 homers and had 1,194 RBIs with a .258 career average.
The 38-year-old Howard made his announcement in an article for The Players’ Tribune on Tuesday.
Beckham challenges speeding charge
LONDON
Former England captain David Beckham is challenging a charge of speeding in his Bentley over a technicality.
Lawyer Nick Freeman says Beckham accepts driving at 59 mph in a 40 mph (95 kph in a 65 kph) zone in London in January.
But Freeman told a hearing at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday that the notice of intended prosecution arrived one day outside the statutory 14-day window and was therefore “defective.”
